Did you hear that Emmett Torrence almost died from a heart attack? How sad.

One piece of the puzzle surrounding Lorenzo was now in place.

It also explained why Emily hadn’t returned her phone calls or texts, though she had doubts that her father’s condition had been the only reason.

Deciding to go visit her mother that morning, she shot a quick text to Justin asking if he would be joining her. His reply was that he’d be going later with Judith, so Katrina continued getting ready. In addition to her normal bag that she always carried with her, she added a notebook of her own.

She was going to see the scene of the accident, get more gossip details from her mother.

She would be ready the next time she saw Lorenzo.

One last look in the mirror let her know she was ready to make the trip to Willow Creek Road.

“Look at you, all dolledup!” her mother exclaimed as she welcomed Katrina with open arms, pulling her into a warm hug, one that Katrina could now admit she needed. “I never see you all dolled up on a Saturday. Big plans with Timothy?”

Katrina shook her head. “No plans with Timothy. No plans at all, really.” Except to go see Lorenzo after she was done visiting with her parents, visiting the site of the crash.

“Just felt like putting on makeup and wearing...oh, that is a cute dress. Turn around, let me look at you.”

“Mom...” Katrina drew the word out, a smile on her face as she obliged. “It’s just stupid hot outside, and this dress keeps me cool.”

“If it was all about the stupid hot you wouldn’t be wearing makeup.”

“You’re fishing again, Mom.”

“That’s what I do. Come, sit. Your father should be down shortly. He has a wicked case of jet lag.”

“Wicked?”

“Isn’t that what the cool kids say?”

Katrina bit back a laugh. There was no denying that Justin was his mother’s son, with her quick wit, sandy blonde hair, and big blue eyes. Estella Carter was the epitome of warmth and laughter, two things that Katrina desperately needed with Lorenzo’s return having her emotions in shambles.

“Okay, now tell me what’s going on. Everything. Where’s Timothy?”

Katrina could feel heat flood her cheeks. “I...I believe we have broken up.”

“What? What is this nonsense? What did he do? Do I have to sic your father on him? Or Justin...yeah, Justin would be the better choice.”

Katrina shook her head. “He didn’t do anything. He’s upset with me.”

Estella’s eyes widened a fraction. “Whatever for?”

Katrina sighed.

It was time.

“Ren is back.”

“Oh, my goodness,” Estella said in a rush, her fingertips touching her lips. “Oh honey...how are you? Where is he now? What got into that boy’s head that made him hurt you the way he did? And what makes him think he can come back now?”

“Slow down, please.” Katrina had a small grin on her face when she said this, which quickly faded. “He was in an accident. A really bad one, where he could have died.”

Estella’s mouth formed an ‘o’ though no sound came out.

“And Timothy is angry that I’ve been going to see him, so—”
