Armed with the new information, she shot a quick text to Emily with her condolences over her father’s health, wondering if it would cause Emily to soften and speak with her, to find out if she’d been there. With that done, she turned her car around and made the same trek she’d made several days in a row.

She was going to the hospital.

Lorenzo had some more questions he was going to answer.

CHAPTER 16

The atmosphere wasfar different when Katrina arrived at Lorenzo’s hospital room. His laptop was set up on his tray table, music floating from its speakers, and he was not in his bed. She glanced around, noticing the bathroom door was closed, and she smelled the familiar scent of his bodywash.

No more scent of antiseptic.

The room smelled of Ren, and she felt her body instantly react. Chills covered her arms as the scent of him invaded her senses, bringing her back to the feeling of being in his arms just asLa Cienga Just Smiledby Ryan Adams began to play.

And she felt the sudden urge to cry.

“No,” she whispered to herself as she stood there, willing the tears away as the bathroom door opened. Lorenzo emerged, walking stiffly, dressed in a pair of pajama bottoms and hospital socks, water clinging to his body and the edges of his hair. As he turned, his eyes met hers.

And the earth stood still.

“Hi,” he said with an easy smile, all while she tried to will her heart to slow down.

“Hi,” she managed to say back.

“I would have messaged you,” he began as he made his way over to his bed and sat down, “but I’ve been sleeping so much.”

“You need your rest,” she replied, her mind and heart screaming at one another, one wondering what he would have said, the other saying it didn’t matter.

She didn’t know which to believe.

“I wasn’t sure I’d see you.”

“I had things to do,” she said, taking a seat beside his bed to keep herself from shaking. “My mother sends her regards and wishes you a speedy recovery.”

Lorenzo smiled. “Tell her I said thank you.”

“She told me of Mr. Torrence’s heart attack.”

Lorenzo’s smile fell. “What heart attack?”

“You went to see him, Ren. You tell me.”

He shifted his legs onto the bed and settled in, a frown firmly in place. “He was fine when I was there, trust me.”

“Can I trust you?”
