His eyes locked with hers, a profound sadness passing between them. “I suppose I deserve that.”

“You suppose?”

“We had some pretty heated words. He didn’t like what I had to say. But I swear to you he was fine when I left.”

“And what were your heated words about?”

Lorenzo shook his head slowly. “I can’t right now, Trina.”

“Damn it, Ren, I’m trying to figure all of this out. What happened, why you drove the way you did on Willow Creek Road. I saw the accident site. I saw where your car tore through a guardrail, where you went down the embankment into the ravine.”

“It was an accident.”

“I get that, but damn it!” She stood and began to pace, her hands pushing her hair back behind her ears as she did so. “You’re making it increasingly difficult on me. You won’t tell me why they made you leave, you won’t tell me what you were arguing about. And you’re sitting there telling me to trust you. You, the boy that ripped my heart out.”

“I’m so sorry.” His voice was pained, but that didn’t stop her from continuing.

“Here we are ready to take on this project...you better be more forthcoming about your business than you are your personal life. Of course, that doesn’t matter because you made damn sure I wasn’t a part of your personal life, no matter how close you were.”

“Trina—”

“And I’ve been blind, for all of these years. You were keeping things from me back then, too, and I let you.” She turned to face him then, her breathing labored. “Tell me I’m wrong. Please.”

He licked his lips slowly and looked up at her through his long, dark lashes. “You were my saving grace, Trina. The only reason I stayed, the only reason I didn’t run.”

“Run from what?” she asked, tears threatening once more.

“From them.”

She took another step closer. “Why?”

“Where’s...where’s the little girl?”

“Miranda? I imagine with Emily. Stop changing the subject.”

He sighed, his head bowed, his shoulders slumped. “I need patience from you. That’s all I need.” He looked back up at her, his eyes shiny with unshed tears. “Can you give that to me?”

“And then what?”

“Then...as soon as I can...when I find the words, I’ll tell you.”

She inhaled sharply, not wanting to concede.

But her heart couldn’t help it, and before she could stop, she agreed. “Fine,” she said softly, not trusting her voice to be louder for fear it would waver. He nodded and swallowed, still holding her gaze.

She could feel herself being drawn in under his spell.

“What do we do in the meantime?” she asked, and one corner of his mouth lifted.

And her heart was lost.

“Get to know each other again.”

“What’s your favoritecolor?”

“What?” Katrina asked with a laugh as they lay in the large field staring up at the stars.
