“Let me guess; you don’t do a Christmas tree, either.”

Katrina shook her head. “No. It’s just me here.”

“Depressing.”

“Not really.”

“Yes, Trina, it is. You should decorate in here. Make it look more like a home and less like a hotel room. Even they display art, though.”

Katrina bit back a smile. Judith was simply being Judith, and for some reason it wasn’t bothering her this evening. “I’ll get some up soon.”

“I bet you’ve been saying that since you moved in.”

“Pretty much.”

“What, you’re avoiding coming across pictures of Cade?”

Katrina’s grin fell. “Yes,” she admitted. She’d been avoiding pictures of him since she’d packed them all away, finally resigning herself to the fact that he wasn’t coming back.

And now he had.

“Forget the old pictures. Do something new.” Judith glanced around. “Like that wall right there. Put hilarious pictures up and you’ll never be able to be so blah in here again.”

Katrina let out a laugh. “Sounds sophisticated.”

“Fuck sophistication. We had enough of that growing up. Do something real. Something you. You used to be the wittiest, the funniest person I knew. Cade may have been an asshole, but you were anything but. You were preoccupied with all things Cade, but you were still so...bubbly, so happy. Everyone deserves happy.”

“Even me?” Katrina asked the question without thinking, but before she could retract, Judith replied.

“Hell yes.”

“We need to come upwith a great senior prank. Something that hasn’t been done before,” Judith added.

“So, no dismantling the coach’s car,” Debra said, sounding defeated.

“Don’t be so despondent. You wouldn’t know the first thing about dismantling a car anyway. Trina, what do you think? And if you say you need to check with Ren, you’re giving up your friend card.”

Katrina laughed. “I actually was going to check with Ren about the car, but since that’s out...well, we can’t do caps on typewriters. They all use computers now.”

“No bubble wrap on the floors,” Emily added as she joined the group of girls, setting her lunch beside Debra’s. “I’m not walking on that with heels on.”

“You know,” Katrina said, and Judith groaned. “What?”

“When you start a sentence with ‘you know,’ someone always gets in trouble. Except for you, because trouble rolls right off you with your innocent look.”

“Point made. But I was thinking...why not have everyone skip their last class of the day and have us all just tailgate out in the student parking lot. Minus the alcohol, but still.” Katrina smiled. “It would be epic.”

“And then what?” Emily asked, her mouth in a line.

“Then we go back to your house and have the pool party,” Katrina added. “Just like you planned.”

“I only want certain people there.”

“Of course,” Judith said, “but if we can get everyone in on this, it would be great.”

“We could set up stands for drinks and maybe snacks,” Katrina added.
