Madison

“Oopsie daisy,”the man had said, just as I smashed into his brick wall of a body, my nose practically smushed into his chest. The scent of him filled my nose, and, to my absolute mortification, made my pussy clench with want–I could feel my skin tingling under his touch, his large hands wrapped around my shoulders, and the tingle spread slowly from my shoulders into my chest, into my belly and lower, until I could feel each fractional movement of my sodden thong against my clit and I was tempted to bury myself in his strong arms and beg for his touch.

Wow, omega much, Madison?I forced myself to stand upright and meet his gaze.

I recognized him at once as the man from the table of alphas–how could I not, with those broad shoulders and that gorgeous face… apparently the oopsie daisy had thrown me off.

Oopsie daisy?I had to bite back a giggle. The man was tall and broad and solid, and had saidoopsie daisyas I crashed into him.

And then he surprised me again.

“Want me to carry you?” he had asked, and turned his back. So casually, so off-hand I almost didn’t recognize it for what it was.

He was a beta.

I froze for a moment as I reorganized my thoughts–beta, beta–then took his proffered arm–and if I gripped a little harder than necessary onto his firm bicep then, well, sue me–and let him lead me along the club’s dark back wall, around the dance floor to his table, back to Charlie and Sophia, and now that I knew, I could tell. He was a beta, and if I tried hard enough, I could pick out his scent, quiet under the scents of his alphas, soft and nearly floral, like a delicately scented soap.

Buthis alphas.

Dark roasted coffee and warm melting chocolate and early autumn rain and rich, damp soil, and my head swam as my body reacted to the scents radiating from his skin. “Wait,” I said, stopping so suddenly I nearly stumbled again. We were within sight of the table and the same scents that clung to him were getting more noticeable as we approached the other two men. “Give me a second.”

He turned toward me, his body caging me against the wall, his eyes open wide, his mouth parted. “Are you sure you’re okay, uh..?”

“Madison,” I said, more breathily than I intended, and watched as his pupils dilated. His gaze flicked down to my mouth, then back up, so quickly I wasn’t sure I had seen it at all.

“Madison,” he said, “are you–”

“Rian!”

His eyes closed tightly, and when they opened again, the moment was lost. He turned toward the voice, smiling, and looped my hand into his elbow once again, nearly dragging me closer to the two alphas.

“I was starting to think you’d fallen in,” I heard the smaller alpha drone in a monotone voice as we approached, and then… “Oh,fuck.”

CHAPTERSIX

Gray

Rian had beenin the bathroom for fucking hours. He’d left us at the mercy of the small, voluptuous beta who had commandeered our table and Lucas’s polite, unwavering attention for much longer than I would have preferred. As soon as the woman had approached the table, I knew she wasn’t it, and I knew Lucas knew too, although he’d never have even dreamed of dismissing her. Lucas waschivalrous. He’d probably have brought her home with us and let her ride his knot for hours, just to benice.I huffed to myself, imagining his reasoning:it’s the polite thing to do, Gray, I couldn’t let her leave unsatisfied, after all, this is what an alpha is for, biologically, it’s my duty, blah blah.

I had no such compunction. I slouched down in my seat, glaring at my watery, tasteless excuse for a beer, ignoring the beta’s friend’s–a gorgeous blonde–attempts at conversation and answering direct questions with one word answers. Yes. No. Beer. Fine.

We hadn’t paid for a membership to this stupid club to chat up betas. We could do that just fine on our own, thanks. In fact, we had done so, and landed ourselves Rian, and now look at us: a pack so pathetic that despite the black cards in Lucas’s wallet and my own, we had no omega and apparently, no chance of one. At least not while Charlie–and what kind of a name was that,I thought hypocritically–was commandeering our pack leader’s attention. Her tits were practically in his face, and, great, now she was tossing her hair casually over her shoulder to show off her neck. Body language 101.

But then, as her sleek hair settled down her back, I caught a whiff of it again: that scent. Itwasher. Or, rather, not her, but she had the scent on her–tangled in her hair, on her wrists, like she’d been standing close to the person whose perfume it was, been holding their hand.

I cut off the blonde mid-sentence, cringing internally. I really was being quite rude. Whatever.

“You two are here with a friend?” I asked, “An omega?” I realized too late I sounded creepy, and tried to smile welcomingly. Like I was a friendly german shepherd, maybe, and not a wolf. I knew better than to go for golden retriever. That’s what Lucas and Rian were for.

“Yeah,” she said, “our friend Madison just presented.”

Just presented?Fuck. If this omega friend of theirs ended up being nineteen years old, I would swear off Ardor for good. It would be just our luck to finally find an omega we liked the scent of and have her be a little fledgling bird, barely flown the nest.

That is, if she even wanted us.

More than one omega had been interested in Lucas and me–and our black cards–but… then there was Rian. The beta was the heart of our little pack, he was the one who kept Lucas and me together for all these years, but omegas weren’t interested in, to quote one particularly pretty piece of work: “taking sloppy seconds after a knotslut beta’s asshole.” In a way, it made it easier: Rian was non-negotiable, and if an omega couldn’t accept that they would always, alwaysbe second to Rian–at least for me–then they weren’t the one for our pack. Period. End of discussion.

“...Charlie’s been dying to come here for ages, and she begged Mads to take us. It’s rare, you know, presenting so late, but Madison has always been special, she just doesn’t always realize it–”
