“What’s that you said?” I asked, interrupting her again.

“I said Madison, our friend, doesn’t always think–”

“No, no, before that.”

“She presented late? It’s super rare? Oh, there she is–”

I turned abruptly, to see–and a wave of sweetness nearly drowned me, making the hair on my arms stand on end and my cock stiffen against my tight black dress pants. I half-stood without meaning to, without thinking, as I saw the two of them together:

The omega–Madison–her face tilted up to show off her long, pale neck, her back arched as she braced her ass and shoulders against the wall of the dimly lit club, brown hair falling tangled around her shoulders, and long legs in red, red heels.

And Rian, one hand planted on the wall beside her head, one hand reaching for her, to touch her–her waist, her shoulder, her hip, I didn’t know. I didn’t care. I only knew–

“Rian,” I barked, loud and commanding, making my tablemates jump. I sat, quickly, embarrassed at my momentary loss of control. “Sorry,” I muttered to–to Sophia, I think she said her name was, meeting her wide, startled eyes, and when I looked back, the two of them–the omega and my beta–were strolling, a little too casually, to my eyes, toward us.

“I was starting to think you’d fallen in,” I said, not looking at Rian–my Rian, mine. And then I did, and– “Oh,fuck.”

The omega was beautiful–large, green brown eyes and cascading brown waves and pink, perfectly full lips–but she was also flushed pink from her cheeks, down the column of her neck, into the valley of her small breasts. Her eyes were shining, almost glittering, despite the low light, and she was practically incandescent. I could feel the pheromones rolling off her–sweet, dark vanilla and warm, almost caramelizing sugar, her perfume heady and strong and going straight to my cock, now uncomfortably hard.

She smiled–a slow, spreading smile, like warm honey, and her lips parted, and she said, “alpha–” in a voice like a hot summer day and then, then, I realized:

That Rian was standing next to her, his eyes on mine, his face tight and his smile fixed in place as he watched me devouring the woman beside him, the omega he had escorted straight to the claws of his alpha, the alpha who had sworn to always put him first, to love him above all else. Who had promised, promised, that an omega would always be second to him. Sadness was trickling through the bond we shared. It was faint–I hadn’t noticed it. But–I hadn’t noticed it, I had been too swept up in that scent that threatened to pull me under even now, even as I stood politely, ignoring the painful hardness of my cock against my zipper and nodded, coolly toward the latest addition to our–table. Our table.

Notour pack.

Not yet, at least.

CHAPTERSEVEN

Madison

“These are your alphas,”I stated, leaning in closer to Rian, clutching a little tighter to his arm. I didn’t need to ask. It was obvious. Their scents were stronger, first-hand, so intense they were making me dizzy, and I was thankful that my peach cocktail hadn’t had any alcohol, after all.

“Yes,” he nodded, and I wasn’t sure, but I thought I heard a barely-detectable note of sadness in his voice. Was he unhappy with them? “This is Gray,” he said, gesturing to the smaller man in the perfectly-tailored dark suit, now standing awkwardly in front of me, “and this is Lucas,” he said, as the well-built man stood, and I realized just how tall he really was. He towered over me–I had never felt small, as a slightly-above-average-height woman, and also never understood the allure of feeling small, as a beta, but now… I gripped Rian’s arm even tighter, and felt his hand come up to cover mine protectively.

“Madison, right?” Lucas said, holding out his hand, and I took it. As my small hand landed in his–it was like a lightning strike. Like a wildfire that tore through my veins, from the place where his strong fingers wrapped around mine, down into my belly, down to my very toes, rooting me to the spot.

Is this what it’s like,I thought, being an omega?I would never get used to it. But… no–his face was surprised, his mouth–with full, blushing lips I suddenly longed to kiss–hanging slightly open, as if he meant to say something else and forgot halfway to saying it.

Like I had done.

“Yeah,” I mumbled, “Madison.”

“Lucas,” he said, smiling, his hand still holding mine, sparks still jumping from his fingertips to mine.

“Something is obviously happening here,” said a familiar voice.Charlie. I pulled my hand away, still feeling a faint tingle where his hand had been, but feeling embarrassed.

“Charlie!” I blurted, “no, no–nothing!”

“Whoa, Mads,” she said, laughing as I felt my cheeks heating. “Don’t deny yourself on my behalf!”

“What–no!”

“Mads is new to this wholebeing an omegathing,” Charlie broadcasted to the table, as I made frantic“no no no!”eyes at her from my place at Rian’s side. I realized I should step away, but then she continued, “she was a beta until like, last month.”

Rian’s hand, which had been covering mine on his elbow, suddenly gripped me so hard I nearly cringed away. I looked up at him, but his eyes were locked resolutely ahead. Gray, still standing across the table from us, was staring at the beta, the intensity of his gaze nearly burning a hole in the beta’s temple.

“Right?” Charlie was saying. “Mads?”
