“I… Yeah. I will.”

“Good. Because you owe that girl an apology. I mean seriously, Burke, the poor girl runs away from a bad relationship and you treat her like that?”

Shame burns on my cheeks. God, I’m a piece of shit.

“I went to check on her. And let me tell you, she wasn’t doing well.”

Guilt makes me feel sick. “Do you think she’ll forgive me?”

Marianne sighs. “I don’t know. I hope so. But you hurt her. She said the way you iced her out reminded her of her ex.”

My stomach seizes up, and self-loathing rises up inside of me. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. When Daisy first told me about him, I would’ve given anything for the chance to find the fucker and beat the shit out of him. And now I’m the one who… I shake my head, disgusted with myself.

“So if you want a chance with Daisy,” she continues, “you’ll have to be better. For her and for yourself. Understand?”

I nod and then realize she can’t see me. “I understand.”

“Good. Now stop moping and feeling sorry for yourself and instead focus on what you can do to make it right, okay?”

A smile tugs at my lips. Marianne knows me so damn well. “I’ll try. You’re a good friend, Marianne.”

“I know.” I can hear the smile in her voice. “And so are you, for the most part. Now you just have to figure out how to be a good boyfriend.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“Good. She’s worth it. And now go to bed. You need to look good tomorrow.”

“Night, Marianne.”

“Night.”

I place my phone on the bedside table, not feeling hopeful, but… Well, not unhopeful, either. Maybe I can salvage this mess. If I can be better. I have to be better. I will be better for Daisy.
