Page 21 of Her Father's Enemy

My father lets out a choked laugh. “You’re useless whores. All three of you. Enjoy spreading your legs for those thugs. I have no use for any of you.”

Flint lets out a growl and steps forward, but Holly raises a hand. “No. Let me deal with this.”

Flint grits his teeth, his hands balled into fists, but he stays back. It seems like it takes everything in him not to intervene, not to punish my father for what he said. But I love him for letting Holly have this moment. After what my father did to her, she deserves it.

“They’re not thugs. They’re my family. Our family. They’re better men than you could ever dream of being.”

My father opens his mouth to say something, but Holly cuts him off. “I’m not finished.” She smiles at him sweetly. And then she slams her fist into his mouth.

“Ouch. Damn, that hurt more than I thought it would,” Holly gasps, shaking out her hand while my father groans, blood leaking from his mouth.

My mom lets out a grim chuckle. “Was it worth it?”

“Why don’t you find out for yourself?”

Mom taps her chin, as if considering. “You know what? I think I will.”

“Don’t you dare,” my father gasps. He attempts to walk away, but Flint shoves him back against the wall. And then my mom, my kind, delicate mom, walks over to him and punches him right in the gut. He bends over, wheezing.

Mom turns to look at me, smiling. “Do you want to have a go, honey? It’s very satisfying.”

Flint laughs quietly, and Jacob and Damon join in. “Remind me to never get on your bad side, ladies,” Jacob says.

Mom is still looking at me questioningly. I swallow and walk up to my father, taking in his bloodied face, his labored breathing. Part of me wants to hit him. He deserves it more than anyone I’ve ever met.

Instead, I smile at him and lean in close. “If you ever insult or threaten any of these people again, I will destroy you,” I whisper in his ear. “I’ll call the press and tell them all about what the great Daniel Delaney did to his own daughter. To his wife. To his ex-girlfriend.” When I straighten, still smiling, there’s genuine fear in his eyes. Fear and something that looks a lot like hatred. To my surprise, it doesn’t bother me. “Leave. Now.”

Wordlessly, he turns. Watching my arrogant, mean-spirited father limp away, his head bowed, is the most satisfying thing I’ve ever seen.

When I look at Flint, he’s already watching me with pride shining in his eyes. “Ready to go home, sweetheart?”

I nod and lace my fingers through his. “I can’t wait.”
