He took a sip of his water and stared across at his daughter, Bella. They were having a lunch together, and he wanted to make sure that she was happy.

“We’re doing okay, no thanks to you.”

He smiled, raising his glass to her. “You’re happy then?”

Bella nodded. “I’m very happy. I wished that none of the crap happened before, you know. The lies, the deceit.”

“Honey, I don’t think anyone wants that in any relationship. You’re not alone in thinking that.”

She agreed. “Have you seen Rebecca?”

I was balls deep inside her yesterday night.

“Not since she left, why?”

“I’m just … I don’t know. She’s not really answering any of my calls at the moment. Did she seem sad over Christmas to you?”

“I can’t remember.”

“I think I need to talk to her. I hope everything is okay.”

“I’m sure she’s busy what that restaurant thing.”

“Ah, yes, and with Valentine’s Day around the corner,” Bella said. “Damn, I was going to help her decorate her restaurant.” She looked at the time. “Do you mind taking me there? It has been too long since I saw her, and I did promise. I wonder why she didn’t call to remind me to help out? She usually does.”

“You’ve been dealing with Alaric. Maybe she didn’t want to intrude.”

Bella stared at him. “You’re probably right.”

They finished their lunch, and he drove her toward Rebecca’s restaurant. “Have you ever been here?” she asked.

“A couple of times. Business meetings and stuff.”

“So, do I need to ask if there’s anyone on your dating front?”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her shudder. “Not recently. Do you not want me dating?”

“I don’t mind you dating at all. Maybe you could find someone your own age?”

He laughed.

“Or at the very least someone my own age so I don’t have to look at a girl who is younger than me, and she thinks I should start calling her stepmom.”

“I will do my best.”

“Thank you. You deserve happiness, Dad. I don’t like the thought of you all alone. Now, if the woman is younger and she loves you, for you, then I’ll think about it.”

“So any long-term love interest has to get your seal of approval?”

“You betcha. I’m only looking out for you.”

He parked the car, and she leaned over, kissing his cheek.

“Are you coming in to say hey?”

Before he could answer she was already out of the car.

More than anything he wanted to go inside, and it was rude not to.
