“What the fuck, Sonny?! Don’t tell me you’re still hung up on her.”

“Nah, I don’t give a shit, but I do care if you get hauled into Mr Carmichael’s office for getting into a fight. You could do without the hassle right now, Lee.”

My stomach rolls over at his words and I feel physically sick, thenangry. It might be my go-to emotion when I feel the most vulnerable, but really, is he fucking serious?

“Yeah, run away when things get tough,” I snap, looking at Lee but aiming my remark at Sonny. I know it’s unfair to be angry at him. Iknowthat. As far as he’s concerned I’m the one who’s turned my back on him. I’ve no right to feel this way. None.

“No one’s running anywhere. There’s a time and a place foreverything. That time isn’t now,” Sonny grinds out. It comes out as a threat, and I would’ve taken it as one if I hadn’t seen the truth in his eyes, theapology. He doesn’t mean what he said. He hasn’t stopped caring. There’s a message hidden in his response one that’s aimed very much at me but means something very different to what Lee and Ruby understand. The anger that had quickly flared up, dissolves, leaving me empty and exhausted. Reeling from all the stress.

“I’m not running, just not wasting my time on a turncoat,” Lee adds, looking me up and down.

“How can I be a fucking turncoat when I wasn’t part of your crew to begin with? Are you thick as shit as well as dickless?”

Lee turns puce whilst Sonny covers a smirk with a cough. Now I know for sure he hasn’t given up on me. “Come on Lee, let’s go before she self-combusts.”

“Yeah you’re right. Ain’t worth the time.” Lee glares at me before walking off.

“Tick-Tock!” I shout at his retreating back.

Sonny gives me one last lingering look before walking away.

“Well, shit. You’re one tough bitch, Asia,” Ruby says, startling me. I’d almost forgot she was there.

“Yep, tough as nails and twice as strong,” I retort, feeling anything but.
