“You’re the thief, Sonny, I should be asking you the exact same thing…” I whisper, as he pulls me closer, grazing his lips against mine.

“Touché.”

Sonny runs the tip of his nose along the bridge of mine then peppers gentle, sweet kisses against my forehead and cheeks, smiling all the while.

“That’s right, I’m a thief and I’m here to steal your heart…” He chuckles, laughing at another corny line.

“You’re poetic, you know that, right?” I ask him, smiling to myself as he trails his lips over my chin. When he tips my head to the side and gently nibbles my earlobe, I lose my ability to speak at all.

“I don’t need the stars to light my way when I’ve got the universe right in front of me.”

A laugh bubbles up my throat and bursts free from my lips at the awful line. “They’re getting worse,” I say, shaking my head with mirth.

“I’m getting distracted,” he retorts, pulling back and biting on his lip. He looks up at me from under his flop of hair. This time there’s no mistaking the desire in his eyes. “What’s a man got to do too get you into bed?”

“Do those lines usually work for you?” I ask, tipping my head to the side.

He chuckles. “Pretty much, yeah…”

Shaking my head I get to my feet, pulling him up.

“Smooth, Sonny, real smooth.”

Climbing onto my bed, I make room for him beside me under the duvet. I’m still wearing my tracksuit bottoms and t-shirt, causing Sonny to frown.

“Is this your way of seducing me, Asia? Because I’m more than happy to strip you naked,” he says, a gleam in his eyes.

“You wanted me to get into bed, so here I am.”

“That’s not what I meant…”

“I know that.” I smile gently, cupping his face in my palm once he’s settled down beside me.

“But you’re not going to sleep with me, are you?”

“I’m going to sleep with you, Sonny. I’m just not going tosleepwith you. At least, not tonight.”

It’s not out of spite, or cruelty. I want to connect with him that way, just not tonight, not after everything that’s happened today. He might not like my decision in the moment, but he’ll thank me for it in the morning.

He smirks, puffing out his cheeks. “I guess that’s not a definite no.”

“It’s not a no at all. It’s just a not tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because now isn’t the right time.”

“It feels like the right time to me…” he counters, trying to hide his disappointment and failing miserably. “You slept with Eastern and Ford…”

I sigh, “This isn’t a competition, or a race, Sonny.”

“Sorry, that was a shit thing to say. Guess I’m a little envious, after all.”

“Don’t be… If it’s any consolation, I really, really want to sleep with you. I’d just rather start the next step of our relationship on a new day that isn’t shrouded with death and sadness. Does that make sense?”

“Yeah, it does.” he responds, tucking one arm beneath his head and resting his hand between us. Leaning over, he brushes his lips against mine. “Until tomorrow then.”

“Until tomorrow… Oh, and Sonny,”

“Yes?”

“You don’t have to steal my heart when it’s already yours to keep.”

“Now who’s full of corny lines?” he grins, then tenderly brushes aside a strand of hair that’s fallen across my cheek. “Goodnight, Asia.”

“Goodnight, Sonny,” I murmur, threading my fingers with his. After a few minutes our breathing synchronises and we both fall into a deep, peaceful sleep.
