CHAPTER33

CHRISTY

“How do we know if it will work?” I ask, biting on my lip with worry as Thirteen stirs the off-white viscous liquid. Twenty-four hours have passed since I slept with Jakub and I’ve spent the majority of that time with Thirteen helping her with the poison.

“I have to test it out,” Thirteen replies, pouring the liquid into a slim gold vial.

“Wait, I assumed you’d done this before,” I reply, sniffing the air, surprised to find that it doesn’t have a scent.

She shakes her head. “Not exactly.”

“What do you mean, not exactly? How can you possibly know it will work?”

“The last time I made something similar, the person I used it on actually died.”

“What?!”

“It’s okay though, I managed to bring him back,” she says quickly, waving her hand in the air and dismissing the issue like it’s nothing.

“Thirteen, who are you exactly?”

“Aoife and Niall’s daughter…”

“You know what I mean,” I say. “What you can do it’s not—”

“Normal?” she asks, cocking her head then rolling her eyes. “Coming from the woman who can see into the future.”

“Good point,” I mumble.

She grins. “I just have an affinity with herbs and plants, flowers and berries. It’s not magic, just science, and a good scientist must always test her work. Which is precisely what I’m going to do this time. We can’t actually give the Deana-dhe what they want, now can we?”

“Test it out? What, on an animal?” I ask, my stomach churning at the thought. “Where are we supposed to get one from?”

“No, not on an animal, on me.”

“No! Youcan’tdo that!”

“Of course I can. It’s not as if I’m willing to try it out on anyone else.”

“Thirteen! What if it kills you?!”

She rolls her eyes. “It won’t. Well, I mean it will at least give the impression that I’m dead because that’s the whole point, but I’ll wake up after a couple of hours. Promise.”

“And if you don’t?” I ask, my voice rising with panic.

“Then I guess I messed up.” She shrugs, laughing.

“This isn’t funny,” I say.

“It kind of is…”

I pull a face, then start pacing up and down. “This is a bad idea. Could we not just order something in?”

“What, from Poisons 4 U?”

“You know what I mean!” I exclaim, wringing my hands.

“Even if we could somehow get into the black market and buy something, it’ll have a permanent effect. Which defeats the point. Trust me. I know what I’m doing.”
