“Seriously, Thirteen, what the hellarewe doing?”

“Saving their lives,” she says, reaching for me and grasping my shoulders. “It’s going to be alright.”

“I feel sick.”

“Don’t throw up, Christy. I really just need to get this over and done with and you throwing up isn’t going to be helpful,” she replies, snatching the knife from the counter and dipping the tip of the blade into the vial. She extracts a droplet of the mixture, then hands me the bottle. “Could you cork that, please?”

I take it from her, and without giving me any warning she slices the palm of her hand, the poison mingling with her blood. “There, now we wait.”

“Fuck!” I exclaim reaching for her as she rocks on her feet.

“I should probably lie down,” she says with a small laugh, her cheeks flushing a furious red.

Gingerly taking the knife and placing it on the countertop next to the vial of poison, I help her onto her bed. “How long does it take to work?” I ask, getting her comfortable.

“A minute or two, give or take.”

“What should I do?”

“Wrap up my hand then wait with me?” she asks as though there was any other option.

“Of course I’ll wait with you. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Good. Okay then.”

“What should I expect?”

“My heart will begin to slow down,” she explains, shuffling to the centre of the bed. “It will get to a point where it will appear as though it’s no longer beating. At that point, my lips will turn blue. Don’t be scared, okay?”

“Are you kidding me? I’m terrified right now.”

“It will have a similar effect of a bear going into hibernation. My body temperature will plummet and that will put me into a kind of sleep stasis. When the poison wears off, my normal bodily functions will kickstart and I’ll begin to warm up. Once my body temperature regulates, I will just kind of wake up as though nothing happened. At least that’s the idea.”

“At what point should I worry?”

“I will be out for a few hours. If I don’t wake up after three or four, then I guess it hasn’t worked.”

“Thirteen!” I shout, unable to help myself.

She smiles, her eyes glazing over. “Stop panicking, it’ll be fine.”

I lay down next to her, taking her hand in mine. “Please don’t die,” I say, brushing a strand of hair off her face.

“I’ll do my best,” she whispers.

“I mean it.”

Her head falls to the side, her pupils dilating as she stares through me. She already feels cold. “If I don’t wake up will you tell them that they were right…” she slurs, the blood draining from her face.

“Tell who they were right, The Masks?”

“Tell them that I lied,” she gasps, her voice sounding raspy. “That it was always supposed to be…”

“Thirteen! Shit!” I grasp her face, my thumbs pressing against her cheek bones as her eyes roll back in her head and her lips turn a horrid shade of blue.

“Tell them what?” I ask, my body covering in a rash of goosebumps as the familiar pull of a vision grasps at me. “Wait, no!”

But it’s too late, she’s gone and I’m pulled under.
