“A vision?” she asks.

“Yes, one of you and the Deana-dhe.”

Thirteen sucks in a sharp breath, her face paling. “What did you see?”

“You have a history with them that stretches beyond the debt you owe, don’t you?”

She nods. “Yes.”

“You grew up with them?”

Thirteen sighs, swiping a shaky hand through her hair. “I was sent to a boarding school when I was fifteen. My father thought the special unit fortroubledkids would help me find my voice again.” She laughs bitterly. “All it did was make me a target for three boys who had nothing better to do than torment a girl who couldn’t scream.”

“They hurt you?”

“They tried. I got them back good though…” A smile streaks across her face as she traces the cut on her palm.

“The poison you made before, the one that killed someone?”

“Yep.” She shrugs. “He deserved it.”

“Which one? Was it Arden?”

She shakes her head. “Carrick. He was always the most hateful.”

“Ah,” I nod, makes sense given how he behaved in the vision.

“What did you see?” she asks, chewing on her lip, her gaze wary. It makes me wonder what kind of things went on between them.

“You were sitting in an old ruin. Arden forced you to take a blow back of a spliff. Carrick bit your ear. They wanted you to test the hash you’d supplied.”

She nods sharply. “That was the summer I left the boarding school. They were in town briefly. My father had no idea who Arden was, who they were. If he had, he would’ve no doubt informed the Collector. I didn’t see them after that for two years…” Her voice trails off as she looks down at her hand, her fingers curling into her palm.

“That’s what my mum was talking about, wasn’t she. You’re not running from them because of the debt you owe, you’re running from them because they’re your soulmates just like Arden had said.”

Thirteen flinches. “I don’t believe in soulmates,” she replies.

“We both know that isn’t true,” I reply softly, and this time she doesn’t argue.
