“Open wide, Cyn,” Carrick drawls, watching Arden brush his lips over her mouth.

She shakes her head, tears glistening at the corners of her eyes.

“Just do it, Cyn, and this will all be over,” Lorcan says, a heavy sigh on his lips. “You know we can’t take the goods unless you’ve tried them out for yourself.”

Thirteen glances his way, disappointment flickering in her eyes. A look passes between them and eventually, she parts her lips, a single tear sliding down her cheek that she roughly swipes away.

“There we go, cailleach,” Carrick mutters as Arden presses his mouth against hers and she breathes in the smoke he slowly blows into her mouth. Releasing his tight grip on her hair, Arden inches back, allowing Thirteen to breathe out the remaining smoke. A cloud of grey dances between their faces.

“It’s true, I’m working for your father. The old fool has no idea who I am,” he says, “But don’t get too comfortable, Cyn, he’s still my enemy. As are you. If you speak of this. If you tell him who we are, who I am, I will make your life a living hell. Understood?”

She glares at him. Hate blazing in her eyes.

“It’s a shame you hate us so much,” he says, cupping her cheek almost reverently. “Given you’re our soulmate.”

Thirteen’s eyes widen and she shakes her head furiously, pushing past him and grabbing her things. She picks up her pad and pen, and writes:We are NOT soulmates. I am NOT yours.

“Oh, you will be,” Carrick mutters. “By hook or by crook.”

“Just let her leave,” Lorcan adds, swiping a hand through his silvery hair and kicking at the earth with the heel of his boot. “She doesn’t want to be here.”

Arden chuckles, his expression changing to one of distaste as he steps back. “Until we meet again, cailleach.”

I wake up with a start, blinking away the vision and reaching out to my side. My fingers hit warm skin.

Warmskin.

“Cynthia? Thirteen?” I shout, ignoring the dizziness that always follows a vision and twisting around to face her. I can go over what I saw later, right now making sure she’s okay is my top priority. With utter relief, I notice that the blue hue to her lips has disappeared and there’s colour in her cheeks once more. “Thirteen?” I repeat, pressing my fingers against the pulse in her neck. It beats. “Oh, thank God!”

Pushing myself upright, I check the time on the wall clock. We’ve been out for almost two and a half hours.

“Christy?”

Snatching my head back around, I look down at my friend who’s swiping a shaking hand over her face. “You’re alive. It worked!”

“I knew it would.” She smiles, pushing upright.

I help her to sit, throwing my arms around her in a hug. “Thank God!”

“So what happened whilst I was out?” she asks.

“Erm…” I pull a face, my thoughts straying to the vision I had of her and the Deana-dhe.

“I didn’t wet myself did I?” she asks, interpreting my facial expression the wrong way as she checks her crotch.

“No, I don’t think so,” I respond, smiling a little.

“Then what? It’d be useful to know what to expect so that I can make sure they’re okay after you leave with your family.”

“Leave?” I frown, my stomach flipping over at the thought.

Thirteen reaches for my hand, squeezing it gently. “You have to go with them, Christy. You know that, right?”

“Of course I do,” I say, blinking rapidly. Truth be known I hadn’t thought past the night when I poison them.

She nods, patting my hand. “So what happened to me?”

Heaving out a sigh, I shake my head. “I’ve no idea, I passed out alongside you.”
