Medicine

“I don’t fucking care, Grim!” Carter shouts from inside his office, a week after I shot Saxon in the head not more than a few metres from this spot. “You need to learn to toe the damn line!”

“Toe the line?” she scoffs, a bitter laugh escaping her lips as I push open the door without bothering to knock. Thank fuck the gym cleared out half hour ago, otherwise the patrons would be having a field day listening to this shit.

“What the fuck do you want?” Carter shouts as I step into the room. The vein in his forehead bulging with anger.

“Just a reminder that you’ve got a meeting scheduled in an hour.”

Meeting, my arse. Carter’s got an appointment with his regular fuck at The Crib Club, and an evening of gambling with his friends. Of course, that’s a truth he’d rather keep to himself.

“And you couldn’t fucking knock first?” he retorts, scowling.

“I did, you didn’t hear,” I lie.

The fact of the matter is, they’ve been arguing for the past ten minutes about Kate’sextracurricularactivities after Carter sent her to his strip club a few days ago to go over the books and learn a few things about running a successful business with Matilda, the manager. Only she ended up learning more than he’d bargained for. According to Matty, as we all call Matilda, she’s really good at pole dancing. All that upper body strength she’s gained from sparring in the ring with me, and yoga shit she likes to do, has given her the perfect tools to spin around a pole. She’s flexibleandstrong.

Clearly, Carter’s just found out and is pissing fire about it.

Can’t say I blame him. The thought of Kate spinning around a pole in heeled platform shoes has got me feeling all kinds of ways too. Mostly dick-as-hard-as-rock ways, combined with whose-eyes-do-I-need-to-gouge-out ways. Seriously, the fuck?

Carter scrapes a hand through his hair and eyes Grim. “We’ll talk about this later. I’ve got work to do.”

“There’s nothing left to talk about. I was havingfun. The club was empty apart from the girls. It was no big deal. It wasn’t as if I flashed my tits at a bunch of desperate men likehim,” she argues, folding her arms across her chest in anger as she jerks her chin at me.

Desperate?Rude. But also, thank fuck. My inner possessive arsehole takes a calming breath now that he knows the club was closed.

“Excuse me?” I raise a brow at her sass, which of course she fucking ignores. “I’ve never been desperate in my life. Women flock to me, not the other way around.”

She smirks. “Whatever you tell yourself to make you feel better.”

Carter’s fist lands on the table with a loud thump, making Kate jump. “I don’t give a fuck if you were having fun. You’re a Davidson,” Carter seethes, thumping his fist against the table to drive the point home. “You actaccordingly. Do I make myself clear?”

“Crystal,” she bites out.

“Good because I’m done with your shit tonight.” Carter stands, pulling on his suit jacket and grabbing his phone and wallet from the desk, dismissing her with a wave of his hand. I can see the rage bubbling beneath her skin and she opens her mouth to argue, but I cut in.

“I’ve got the car pulled up out front.”

“Good, I’ll get Dom to drive me. You can take Grim home and make sure she fucking stays there.”

“I don’t need a babysitter!” Kate argues, taking the words right out of my mouth because I sure as fuck don’t want to babysit her either. Every time we’re alone together something stupid fucking happens and I need to keep my distance.

“What you need is a lesson in respect!” Carter roars, his face turning red as he stalks around his desk and strides over to Kate. She stands her ground, too stubborn to back down.

“Carter—” I begin.

“Stay thefuckout of this!” he shouts, turning his rage back on Kate. “Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?”

She glares back at him, her fire meeting his. “You once told me that I need to stand up for myself. That I should never letanyone, no matter who they are, walk all over me. I’m doing that now,Dad,” she adds with as much venom as she can muster.

Fuck me, she’s fierce tonight.

I wait for Carter to explode because the only thing he hates more than being disrespected is being called out. I ready myself to grab him, because whilst he’s my boss and I respect him, I don’t respect any man that hits a woman. They face off, nose to nose, and then Carter does something that surprises me, he laughs. Tipping his head back, he roars with fucking laughter. Kate’s as shocked as I am by his sudden change of attitude.

“Carter?” she questions, looking far more bothered by his laughter than she was by his anger.
