Dom laughs. “If Ramone hadn’t conceded, I might’ve.”

“And Clayton?” I ask, rolling my head on my shoulders to try and ease the tension in my neck and back.

“You fucked him up good and proper, but he’ll live,” Joey says. “He got lucky this time. I’ve advised him not to fight for a while.”

“Bet that went down like a lead balloon,” Dom says with a smirk before taking a sip of his beer.

“Don’t much care if it did. There’s only so long you can avoid the grim reaper. Know what I’m saying?” Joey says, giving me a look that tells me he’s no longer talking about fighting in the cage.

I flick my gaze to Dom, understanding Joey’s got something to say but won’t in front of him. “Can you give us a minute?”

Dom nods. “Sure thing. I’ve got to get back out there anyway. Carter wants me to meet the King now that he’s officially going into business with him.”

Joey’s bushy eyebrows shoot up into his hairline, but other than that he keeps his thoughts to himself. He’s a wise man. We both like Dom, but we don’t have frank discussions about Carter in front of him, or any of the other men who work for the boss, for that matter.

“He told the rest of the crew already?” I ask.

“Yeah, earlier this evening before you arrived with Princess. I figured you already knew, given you’re his right-hand man and all.”

“Yeah, I did.”

“Right then, best be off,” Dom says, discarding his empty beer bottle in the bin. “The sooner we get this official shit over with, the sooner I can go get my dick wet. Tonight Nancy’s invited me over to her place and I intend on blotting you from her memory.” He grins, and I shake my head.

“Not possible, mate, but I respect you for trying.”

“After a night of passion with me it’ll beBeast, who?”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“Why can’t you just humour me? You’re giving us mere mortals a bad fucking name,” Dom retorts, before striding towards the door.

“Can’t help it if I’m a god in bed, now can I?” I call after him, only to receive the middle finger in response. The door slams shut behind him and I take another sip of the whisky.

Joey smirks, packing up his medical bag. “I like Dom.”

“Not enough to chat personal shit in front of him though.”

“Nope, not yet anyways. He’ll prove himself one day and then we’ll both feel more comfortable. I’ve got a good feeling about him, same as that kid Hudson Freed. I’ve been around long enough to know who’s a good egg, and who’s rotten.”

“That’s why we’re friends, right?”

He laughs. “Yeah, that’s why we’re friends.”

“So what did you want to say?” I ask, waiting for the lecture that I know is coming.

“You’re going to get yourself killed.”

“How do you figure that?”

“I’ve got eyes. Something has happened between you and Grim, hasn’t it?”

Scrubbing a hand over my head, I blow out a long breath and nod.

“I told you not to fuck her.”

“I didn’t.”

“What then?” He takes the bottle of whisky from me and takes a generous sip, before swiping the back of his hand across his mouth.
