“Let’s just say she offered herself to me and I turned her down.”
“She did?”
“Yep, she did.”
“And you turned her down?” he repeats, narrowing his eyes.
“Yeah, I fucking did.”
Joey squeezes my shoulder. “Wise move.”
“Then why does it feel like it wasn’t?”
“What’re you saying?”
“My head’s telling me I did the right thing even though it was the single hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but…”
“But?”
“But my fucking heart ain’t so sure,” I admit, fucking surprising myself.
“You sure it’s your heart and not your dick that’s uncertain?” He folds his arms across his chest and leans back against the table, smirking.
“She was fucking naked, Joey, and I turned her down. I’m fucking certain.”
Joey’s eyes widen and he whistles. “Well, fuck. Quite the predicament you’ve got yourself in, Beast.”
“Tell me about it.”
“So what’re you gonna do?”
“Nothing. She made it clear to me that she won’t be offering herself up to me again.”
“Is that so? Do you believe her?”
“Yeah.” I sigh, knocking back another glug of whisky, then stand.
“And you’re alright with that?”
“I thought you said I should steer clear?”
Joey swipes a hand over his beard, tugging on the end as he thinks. “I did, that’s true. But fucking Grim and caring for her are two different things.”
“I’m not sure Carter would agree.”
“Perhaps not, but that’s neither here nor there. You choose who you’re loyal to, not him. Besides, we both know that girl has the power and the balls to run Tales. It won’t be long before Carter will be stepping aside to make way for her.”
“You’d think, but I ain’t so sure now.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Just a hunch,” I say, meeting his gaze. When he opens his mouth to ask me about it, I shake my head. “I ain’t voicing anything until I know for sure.”
“Understood,” Joey replies. “And this thing he’s got going with the King, has that got anything to do with your concerns?”
“You could say that.”
“I heard he’s bringing new fighters to Tales from Europe, that he’s taking a cut of the takings for the trouble.”
