Hudson nods. “Of course.”

I don’t know the details of Cal’s past, but I do know he ended up in the care home with the others for a couple of years whilst his mum got her shit together. He’s back with her now, but the friendship the boys made is still as strong as ever. I don’t think that will ever change.

“Don’t worry, Cal, you’ll always be our number one side-piece,” Max jokes, earning him a punch on the arm.

“Fuck you, arsewipe,” Cal grins.

“Ow, fuck. You know I’m only joking, that honour belongs to Grim. Right, Grim?” Max asks, winking at me.

“Ha ha! You should know by now that I’m no man’s side-piece,” I reply, raising a brow and giving him my best death glare, but my lip twitches and I end up smiling because there isn’t one person on this planet that can stay mad at Max for long. He’s a lovable fool and completely harmless. Though I’m pretty sure his wit is a defensive mechanism. We’ve all got one, his just happens to be humour.

“Tell that to that big bastard that calls himself Beast. Pretty sure he wants all your pieces,” Max replies, wiggling his brows.

“Funny!” I shout, picking up a cushion off the sofa and throwing it at him as he runs from the room.

A few minutes later, the flat is a lot quieter and it’s just me and Hud sitting on his sofa sharing his last beer. “Those two eat me out of house and home. The sooner they leave the children’s home the sooner I can set them to work.”

“What’s the plan?” I ask, curious to know what scheme he’s come up with to get them all out of the gutter. His words, not mine.

“For the last three years since I left the children’s home I’ve been working my arse off.”

“I know you have. You’re the hardest working person I know,” I say with a smile.

“Wow, Grim, is that a compliment?”

“Don’t get used to it. I need my best friend to remain un-bigheaded.”

“Not possible,” he grins, pointedly looking at his dick.

“Eww, fucking gross! I did not need that visual in my life.” We both laugh and then I nudge him with my shoulder. “So you were saying?”

“I’ve managed to secure a loan from the bank and have added that to my savings,” he continues. “And I’m going to put a deposit down on a tiny studio flat on the other side of town.”

“What’s wrong with this place?” I ask. His flat isn’t huge by any means, but it does have two bedrooms and it is low rent given it’s owned by the local authority.

“Absolutely nothing. We’re not going to live at the studio flat. The deposit is for a mortgage.”

“You’ve managed to get a mortgage from an actual bank? How in the hell did you pull that off?”

Hudson grins. “I have my ways. Anyway, we’re gonna do the flat up and flip it for a profit. The plan is to keep doing that until we’ve got enough equity to buy our own place outright.”

“Wow, that’s… ambitious,” I reply, impressed.

“You don’t think I can do it?” he asks, trying not to look affronted even though I can tell that he is.

“Of course I do! I just… Well, I’m impressed. You’re not just a pretty face, are you?” I joke. Hudson is smart, one of the smartest people I know.

“Talking of pretty faces, how are things with you and Beast?” he asks, changing the subject smoothly.

“Same as usual,” I lie, avoiding his gaze and taking a sip of beer.

“That’s not what your loved-up face said earlier. ”

“A face can’t get loved-up, you moron.”

“You’re not denying it then?” he asks, taking the bottle from me and finishing it off in one long gulp as I try to figure out what to say. I trust Hudson one thousand percent, but I don’t know how to talk about my relationship with Beast because at the moment we don’t officially have one. Just a promise.

Maybe I should start with that?
