“You don’t, but I give you my word that I will tell you where the King is as long as you let me go. I have no issue with either of you. I’m just a man who wants to live out the rest of his days on the ocean. That’s it. That’s all,” Malakai says, resting his hands on the table as he waits.

“My head is telling me not to trust you, but my gut…?” Kate says, her voice trailing off as she heaves out a sigh. I know she’s running through all of our options and coming up with the same result as me, which is that we’re out of options.

“Your gut…?” Malakai prompts.

“There aren’t many people I believe in, but someone special once told me to trust my gut because it already knows what my head and my heart are yet to discover. On this occasion, I’m taking their advice.”

“So you agree to my terms?”

“Give me your phone,” Kate says, holding her hand out. Malakai drops it onto her palm and watches as Kate punches in her telephone number before handing it back to him. “It’s because of that person I’m letting you sail out of here.”

Malakai meets her gaze and nods. “Thank you.”

“You can thank me when the King is dead.”

“Fair enough.”

“And Malakai…” Kate leans across the table and grips his arm, whilst giving him a look that could slay a fucking army.

“Yes?”

“If I’m wrong and this is a trap, not only will I kill the King, I will spend the rest of my days hunting you down, and when I find you I will set this boat alight with you inside of it.”

He nods, something close to respect lighting up his eyes. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.”
