“You know you could just tell us now and get it over with. Much better to pull the plaster off quickly, right?” I remark.

Ford picks at the hole in his jeans, considering what I’ve said. When he finally looks back up, he opens his mouth to speak only to slam it shut again when there’s a knock on the door.

“Looks like you were saved this time,” I say, raising a brow at the kid.

He shrugs. “There ain’t nothing to be saved from.”

Kate eyes me then looks at Ford. “We’ll pick back up this conversation another day, okay?”

Ford nods. “Yeah, cool. Whatever.”

“Come in,” Kate says, and the door swings open.

Dom steps inside followed by Malakai who doesn’t even look like he’s broken a sweat. He briefly glances at me, then Ford, before finally resting his gaze on Kate.

“You wanted to speak with me?”

“Actually,Iwanted a word,” I say.. “Thought I should introduce myself.”

“No introduction needed. I know who you are, Beast,” Malakai replies, and even though there’s nothing disrespectful about his response, it feels that way.

“That’s good, we can get right down to the nitty gritty then.”

“Do you need me?” Dom asks, waiting for permission to leave.

“Actually, could you do me a favour and take Ford back to your place?” Kate says. “He needs a place to sleep tonight and we’re going to be a while yet.”

Dom raises his brow, but he doesn’t argue. Kate’s the boss and what she wants, she gets. “Sure thing,” he replies, motioning to Ford to follow him. “We got a spare room you can sleep in for the night and Nancy does a mean fry-up for breakfast. It’ll be like staying in a hotel for the night.”

“Sound good?” Kate questions.

Ford nods. “I guess so.”

“Excellent. We’ll see you in the morning at ten sharp. That should give you enough time to sleep, check in at your home, then eat and get your arse back here for training, yeah?” I add, only because I don’t want to be up at the arsecrack of dawn on a Sunday morning, especially since I get the feeling this night ain’t gonna end anytime soon.

Ford stands, his hands stuffed into his jean pockets. “Okay then.”

“Come on lad, let’s get moving. I got a woman to get home to,” Dom says, jerking his chin to the open door, a friendly smile on his face.

He’s a good man, one of the best, and despite Ford not knowing him all that well, he can sense it too. When you're a kid who’s grown up in an abusive relationship with an adult you learn pretty quickly who you can trust and who you can’t.

Ford moves across the room, giving Malakai a wide berth as he passes him by. When he reaches the door he turns to Kate and says, “Thanks… for everything.”

“We look out for our members,” she says before he disappears through the door, closing it behind him.

“That kid’s a member of Tales?” Malakai asks, a curious expression on his face.

“Take a seat,Jack,” I say, jerking my chin to the chair Ford just vacated and ignoring his question.

“The name’s Malakai,” he replies.

“I know who you are,” I say, throwing his words back at him. What can I say, I’m feeling a little petty tonight.

Malakai folds himself into the chair then says, “Respectfully, Grim, I’d like to get back to my boat, so if we could make this quick—”

“You’ll go when she says it’s time for you to go, fuckface, and not before.”

Malakai raises his brows and shifts in his seat, but fortunately for him (and unfortunately for me) he doesn’t act on his impulse to throw a punch and stays seated.
