“Yes, of course.”

“But you can’t see love and you can’t touch it.”

“I touch Kate all the time,” I joke.

“That’s not the same,” she points out. “Love is unexplainable. There’s no formula or recipe. It just happens to us, and we accept it without question because wefeelit.”

“So you’re saying that your gift is like love?” I ask, trying to understand.

“In a way, yeah. It’s just as unexplainable but that doesn’t make it any less true. I can’t tell you why I am the way I am, all I can tell you is that it’s real.”

“You’re a smart kid.”

Christy grins, shrugging her shoulders.

“She’s certainly very special,” Kate says, leaning over and pressing a kiss against Christy’s forehead.

“She is, but to be fair I thought Christy was special before I found out about her witchy gifts,” I say, winking at the kid.

“She’s not a witch!” Sandy snaps, and it’s the first time her kindness makes way to a fierce protectiveness. I’m so taken aback that for a moment I can’t form the words to speak.

“Shit! No, I didn’t mean it as an offensive remark,” I eventually say. “I think it’s fucking cool. Sorry if it came out that way.”

It’s not a complete lie, I didn’t mean to offend anyone and I do think it’s cool even thoughIamstill spooked by the whole thing. Imagine being able to see into the future. That shits gotta mess with your head, right? Then I look at Christy and she just seems like any normal twelve year old girl. Except she isn’t normal. She’s far from it.

“Apology accepted,” Christy says.

“So are you able to tell me anything about my future?” I ask, curious now.

She shakes her head, her smile dropping. “No. I can’t do that. It’s dangerous.”

“What do you mean?” I frown, and she sighs.

“I can’t tell anyone anything specific.”

“Why not?”

“Because…” she drops her head, her fingers twiddling with the hem of her pyjama top.

“Because she’s afraid that bad things will happen if she does,” Frank fills in, squeezing her shoulder gently. “So we never ask, and we accept what she feels comfortable telling us.”

“I get it,” I say, leaning back in my chair as Sandy hands Christy the cards and she takes them out of the pack, shuffling them. “Can’t be easy to carry around all that knowledge though.”

Christy’s hand still as she looks up at me. “It depends.”

“On what?”

“On what I see. It can be good too.” She grins, then looking between Kate and me, says, “If I hadn’t persuaded Kate to listen to what you had to say that day you turned up at the club, you probably wouldn’t be sitting here now.”

I sneak a look at Kate’s who shrugs. “Probably would’ve got Mark to shoot you in all honesty.”

Sandy gasps and Frank’s eyes widen but Christy sniggers. “She’s just joking, aren’t you, Kate?”

“Yeah, once is enough,” Kate retorts, grinning.

This time it’s Christy’s turn to look shocked, and then we all crack up, laughing at the irony. I guess that was something she hadn’t seen in either of our futures, or rather, pasts.

An hour later we’ve all been drained of our spare cash as Christy plays cards like she’s been hustling her whole life. Pity her dad wasn’t half as smart as she was; if he had been, he might still be alive today. Then again if he was still alive, me and Kate might not be together, and I rather him dead with Kate in my arms and Christy in our lives than the alternative.
