“Both good choices.” The server retreated, and I was already salivating.

“So what happened last night was crazy, right? Seriously, my poor brother, I don’t know what’s worse, dealing with an assault charge or having to deal with Dad.”

“It’s terrible.” I shook my head.

“I wish Dad wasn’t so tough on him. He’s not like that with me, only Connor. I don’t understand it.” She sighed. “Anyway, Connor’s a big boy.”

Yes, he is.I couldn’t help it. My mind wentthere.

“You know Olivia and I are giving our own business some more thought.”

“You are? That sounds great! You guys would kill it. You know it’s so difficult to find quality interior decorators.”

“Especially designers who cater to the high-end clientele… and with my contacts, we could doreallywell.”

“Do it!”

She fidgeted with the corner of the menu. “We’d be leaving Barrett in a hole.”

“Well, do it when you have a plan, and you’re not leaving Barrett in a hole.”

“We’re working on it.”

“Does he know?”

“Of course. Nothing is off-limits with us. We’re an open book.”

“How sweet,” I said, and it came out a little sarcastic, which I had not intended.

She side-eyed me. “How’s everything with Jake?”

“A work in progress.”

“You know I’m your biggest advocate, so I’m going to say this, with love… sometimes flogging a dead horse isn’t worth it.”

“I know, but I really haven’t tried.” I let out a sigh. “If I’m honest, I’ve been a little distracted,” I admitted rather sheepishly.

She narrowed her eyes. “Does this have to do with the one-night stand from a few weeks ago at my housewarming?”

“Possibly. But you know me. I don’t kiss and tell.”

“Goddammit! Tell me everything. No wonder you’ve been reluctant to patch things up with Jake.”

“No, honestly, it’s not like that. That guy… well, he was just a way to get over Jake. He used me too, and we both knew what we were doing.”

“And now?”

“And now, it’s over,” I said, leaving the sentence to hang in the air.

“It doesn’t sound like it’s over.”

“It’s complicated.”

“Do you like him more than a fuck?”

At that moment, the server appeared with two plates, and we both laughed.

The server let out a slight smile before setting down the pastries and quickly walked away.
