“All I know is she’s worked her ass off to get where she is. She came from very humble beginnings, and that’s pretty much Olivia. Hey, can you walk a little?”

“Sure, just a little,” I said, taking her arm for support and rounding the corner. “Well, I’m so happy we’re all bridesmaids together. It’s going to be one epic wedding!”

“And my fourth bridesmaid is Evelyn.”

“Evelyn Black, Barrett’s sister from Boston?”

“Yes. Oh, hun, that’s so sweet. I had a brief chat with her at the charity ball, and she seemed so lovely.”

“Yeah, she’s a gem. I’m trying to convince her to come live out here.”

“What’s stopping her?”

“She has the best doctors and help where she is in Boston. Her local hospital and doctors have been fantastic in her treatment for her permanent injuries.”

“Surely, Barrett could fly them out?”

“Of course, in a heartbeat, he’d do anything for his sister, but she’s reluctant to leave all her friends. Anyway, let’s just say I’m working on it.”

“I can’t wait. Have you set a date yet?”

We slowed down in front of a store. When I looked up, I realized it was a familiar name.

“Not yet. Wait. Isn’t this the lingerie store we visited in the Hamptons?” Lourde asked, noticing the same discrete signage and blacked-out windows we saw in East Hampton.

“Oooh, it is!” I said. My excitement suddenly waned when I realized the lingerie bought in the Hamptons was just for Jake.

“What is it?”

“It’s just I bought all this lacey stuff for Jake, and now, I can’t comprehend why he’d do what he did with her.”

“I can’t either.” She gripped my hand.

“Sorry, this is so not important right now when we are talking about you.”

I shook away my sadness. But I wasn’t sad about Jake. Rather it was that both my men had found someone else. And suddenly, I felt like the backup option.

“We don’t have to go in,” Lourde said.

“Don’t be ridiculous. We have to go in. We need to get you something for your wedding night!” Without waiting for a reply, I pressed the doorbell.

“And maybe if it doesn’t work out with Jake, you can find something in here for your fuck- buddy.”

I laughed. Hell, there was no harm in looking. Was there?

“If you insist,” I muttered, and the heavy door swung open.

“You look hot!” Jake said, staring across at me from the corner table in the Italian restaurant.

Something derailed his grand plans to pick me up again, so I had to make my own way into Soho.

He looked handsome, but that didn’t matter. Being half an hour late, I nearly emptied my third glass of Chianti, and if it weren’t for the homemade bread I’d been holing out, I would have left already.

“Thanks,” I said, turning my head, so he kissed my cheek.

“I’m sorry I’m late. Work ran late, and then the Manhattan traffic. You know what it’s like, honey.”
