“Make sure no one is around,” Jaygen warned.

Foi waved him off, stripping out of his clothes and letting his wolf come forth. He ran around making sure to stay close, and although it was private, it was best not to get caught. Supernaturals were out to the public, but it was best to stay within the designated cities where they were protected. The world liked to say that it was to keep humans safe. Still, it had been proven again and again that humans, no matter how weak, were capable of mass genocide without question.

Time seemed to slow down as Foi relaxed outside. The night breeze rustled through his fur, calming him ever further. The most tantalizing scent fluttered under his nose and he turned to see Porter walking out of the house still fully dressed except for his shoes. Foi went over to the human. He plopped down just as Porter fell. He was laughing, and his shoes were off, so Foi figured he was free from hurting himself.

“Aww who's a pretty puppy,” Porter cooed. His breath smelled of the wine they had and a hint of berry that was all Porter. Foi licked his face and Porter burst with laughter. He fell back, his dress slipping up.

Foi shook out his coat and nudged Porter with his nose to get him back into the lake house. Foi couldn’t run like he’d wanted, but it was still nice to be in his wolf form under the night sky in the quiet of the evening.

“Stop Foi. That tickles,” Porter said.

Foi huffed and gave up. He glanced at the door and waited for Jaygen to storm out and demand he shift back and Porter come in, but after a few minutes passed, Foi laid down.

“You have such beautiful black fur,” Porter said in awe. He pushed his slender fingers to his coat and petted him as if he were a common dog and not a huge wolf on four legs. He didn’t hate the petting, although most werewolves would balk at the thought.

They sat there together, just basking in the nice breeze and the sight of the stars. Porter scooted closer and Foi glanced over at the human. His eyes were at half-mast, but his lower lip trembled slightly. Foi got up. The sandy dirt under his paws giving way as he shifted and wound himself around Porter, shielding him from most of the breeze.

Porter sighed and they were once again surrounded by the sound of nature and the waves licking the shoreline by the lake only steps away.

“I spoke to my sister,” Porter said, breaking the silence.

Foi’s ears went up and he eyed Porter, but the human kept scratching behind his ears and staring off into nothing. An unfocused look came over his eyes.

“She’s always been safe from my father’s wrath and I thought it would stay that way. But—” He stopped talking and Foi hit Porter with his tail.

“But I never took into consideration that with me gone, he’d turn his sights on my sister or really anyone else. I always assumed he’d hate me and disown me. But that’s not all he wants. He wants me dead.”

The last part was whispered as if even Porter couldn’t believe it. Foi growled, his beast more than ready to kill the bastard. Foi’s gaze tracked around the private backyard, his ears up listening for any approaching enemies, but all was quiet. His wolf was more than ready to herd Porter inside.

“I know calling her today was risky, especially after everything you all did when my father found me at PGD. But I missed her so much.”

Foi shifted and pulled Porter to his chest. He still said nothing as the human turned in his arms and he pressed his face into the crook of Foi’s neck.

“I might have put everyone in danger again,” Porter whispered, his voice trembling. “I’m so fucking selfish.”

Foi held Porter’s head to him and clung to the human. “You shouldn’t apologize when, if given the chance, you would do it again. I’m sure the prickly tiger would be upset, but even he would understand.” Foi looked up at the moon. “Family is important and missing your sister is perfectly understandable. If you want to help her, there is no need for you to do it alone. We all want to protect you, Porter.”

Porter’s head lifted up, and Foi looked down at him, wiping any evidence of tears away.

“Just don’t be reckless and jump into danger.” Foi cupped Porter’s face and kissed him gently. “Leave that to me and Cyrus.”

Porter’s brown eyes looked so unsure, and Foi wanted nothing more than to ease the weight on his shoulders.

“Are we just some guys you have sex with and work with?” Foi asked, quickly realizing that maybe his words were more brash than what he’d been aiming for.

“What?” Porter pulled back, a perfectly arched brow cocked in question.

Nerves bounced around inside of Foi; he had hoped to help Porter realize they meant more to each other than the physical, but now that he voiced the question, he realized there hadn’t been mention of them being more.

“I mean, you know,” Foi growled. His frustration was building, and he was starting to think he should just shift back into his wolf form. At least then he wasn’t fumbling over words.

“No running away,” Porter said. He tilted his head slightly, and a determined look came over his face. “Speak, puppy.”

Foi couldn’t help the smile that stretched on his face. “Would you like for me to bark or actually talk?”

Foi had meant it as a joke, but the pure molten heat that appeared in Porter’s eyes spoke volumes. He swallowed and shifted a little.Stay focused. Don’t get lost in Porter’s allure.

“I was asking if we were something more.”
