“Thank you.”

“I love you, dumb ass,” Spooky said.

Gamble didn’t have to think about it; he knew what he felt. “I love you too.”

He felt it the moment it happened. Gamble jerked back and swallowed the groan. “We have to get the kids out of here.”

“What’s wrong?”

“One of the dragons is free.” Gamble tried to figure out which one of them had gotten out the deep illusion he’d cast them in. No doubt the woman had helped one of them before leaving them to try and kill Gamble.

A roar that sounded close to thunder cracked in the air adding to the already overwhelming noise of battle. Spooky shifted into his panther form just as a tail came toward them. Gamble covered the kids as he laid as flat as possible. Spooky dodged the attack and went on the offensive.

“Wait,” Gamble shouted. But Spooky was already attacking the red dragon. But he was no match.

Fire blazed around the dragon and Spooky narrowly escaped. Gamble’s heart was lodged in his throat as he watched Spooky try and fight adragon. Even with his form as a panther, there was no way.

The dragon knocked the familiar back, sending him flying past Gamble.

“Spooky!” Gamble’s voice broke and for the first time in his life, he wished he had more power.

The dragon took to the air but dropped right back down near Spooky. The dragon’s gaze was set on Gamble’s familiar.

“Spooky, get out of there!”

But the familiar didn’t move out of the way. He got back up and the panther faced the dragon.

No no no.Gamble couldn’t let it happen.

Lightning struck out of the sky and pierced the dragon. He rolled over, letting out a roar. Gamble held his breath maybe— hope died the moment the red dragon lifted its massive head.

His gaze moved over to Spooky still standing his ground but as he squinted he noticed the familiar was favoring one of his legs. Gamble closed his eyes he’d never thought he’d touched the part of his soul the world deemed a curse. But for Spooky, Gamble would sell his soul. He licked his lips. He may not be able to do anything with it but Spooky made it clear what Gamble couldn’t do, he could.

With all his trust and love Gamble dragged up the demon side of him and let the black sludge cover the bond between him and Spooky.

A swirl of darkness surrounded Spooky and Gamble shoved more of his power through their bond. He’d give Spooky everything. If he could do nothing else with his power he knew the familiar could. Tears pricked at the corner of his eyes as it felt like lava flowing through his veins.

The dragon came toward them and Gamble dropped back to the ground sucking in shallow breaths. His eyes drooped and he exhaled shakily. Gamble had he fought with everything he had.

“Spooky,” Gamble whispered. He could feel the familiar through the bond. Even as the earth shook with every step the dragon took toward them. His sole focus was on the cloud of smoke. It dropped away and something out of a horror movie stood where Spooky’s panther form had once been.

It was twice the size of the panther. Huge, twisted horns protruding from its head, a long smoky tail, and cat ears. Black leathery wings spread from its back and its large mouth opened and let out an ear-shattering wail.

There should be nothing but fear faced with the one thing he’d been running from his entire life. But even faced with the demon magic in him there was no fear when he knew it was Spooky.

“Spooky, take care of the rest,” Gamble said.

He could have sworn the familiar smiled at him as he attacked a full-fledged dragon. Gamble wanted to stay and watch but he could feel he was running out of time. The moment he passed out the other dragons and shifters would be set free. He needed to get the kids out of there and Spooky would be right behind him.

The dragon let out a cry and fire blazed near them. They took to the sky and Gamble couldn’t help but smile. It was more than likely Spooky’s first time fighting in the air and yet he was going toe to toe with a beast that specialized in fighting in the air.

Gamble got both kids up, one of them groaning as awareness tried to bleed back into her eyes.Just a little bit longer. He needed to make it to Arden and the guys. Everything would be okay. They’d make it out of there.

Or they would all die together.

Bash couldn’t keeptrack of everyone on the field no matter how hard he tried. The smell of blood, the electric feel of magic in the air, and the sound of screams were all he could focus on. He’d never been a soldier, but he was big and he could bite and claw.

And he would keep doing that until each and every last one of his men were safe.
