Skogg grabs the manual from my hands and takes over. I don’t mind, because it’s true that he’s the expert in this and I know he wants to make sure everything is done correctly so no one gets hurt.

Eventually we have it hooked up correctly. All that is left is for me to throw the switch. And suddenly I’m afraid. What if it doesn’t work?

Skogg stands right next to me. I look up into his eyes. He’s only half phased right now, but still seems very real to me.

“Let’s do a last safety check,” I say. “Skogg was very worried that this could be set up wrong and cause an explosion, like last time.”

“Explosion? What explosion.”

“Yeah, we’re standing in the remains of a rogue science lab that was hidden in this castle. And the last time this device was fully working it exploded and caused Skogg to phase out. He’s never been a ghost, he’s instead been a soldier stuck here as a result of a mad science experiment gone wrong.”

“Oh wow,” Keribel says, “that’s terrible.” She turns her head and looks again directly at her audience, “viewers this episode we are here to save a male who was miscategorized as a ghost. Not only do we document real ghosts, but we diagnose whether ghosts are real or not—”

“And we rescue beings who are designated as ghosts but aren’t!” Noriga adds.

“Yeah…you two are here to save the day,” I answer. “Are you ready?”

“Do it,” Skogg says out loud, “I’ve already done another safety check. I’m ready.”

“Okay,” I nod. And I flip the switch on the generator. A loud buzzing starts as the 4k of stored energy powers up.

The two Ghost Hunters hold hands watching with wide eyes.

I bite my lip, waiting for something to happen—and then it does. Suddenly the lab starts coming back to life. Lights click on and consoles hum. And then the most important part, the device clicks on. And I watch as a glowing beam of light shoots out and surrounds Skogg. He transforms before my eyes from a half-phased male into a solid form. He puts out his claws and stares at himself in wonder as his form solidifies.

“I can clearly see him,” Keribel shouts.

“I see him too!” Noriga confirms. “He’s still damn scary though. We’re going to need more Hyrrokin on our show in the future.” She glances back at the drone. “Next episode, we’re on Tarvos.”

Skogg chuckles and speaks in perfect Gravian, “I’m normally not this solid at sunset.”

“You can speak other languages again?” I exclaim.

He shrugs. “My universal translator is working again.”

I step forward. “It’s over,” I tell him with a shaky voice.

He pulls me in close.

My hands are all over him, touching his chest, his cheek. “See, you’re solid again. You’re back. There’s still a bit of light on the horizon and you’re not phased out at all. I can touch you, feel you. I can’t see through you anymore.”

He nods and then gets a hard look in his eyes. Then he bends down and sweeps me off my feet and I’m in his arms. I let out a squeal of surprise.

He’s taking the basement stairs two at a time, as if I’m light as air. “Time for the true test,” he announces.

True test?

“What is he talking about?” Keribel shouts after us. “What test?”

“I don’t know,” I yell back.

But I tighten my arms around his corded neck and hold on tight, waiting to find out.
