The two fiesty Ghost Hunters follow behind, both carrying lit torches, along with their vid drone that’s casting its own bright light. Then I’m down the front steps and we’re walking down the dark driveway. Keribel and Noriga jog behind to keep up.

And suddenly my female understands what this is all about. “You’re testing the boundary, aren’t you?”

“Yes, I am,” I grunt.

“The true test is to see if you’re able to walk out of here.”

I nod. “I’ve tried this many times this last year to try and leave. At all times of the day and night. I would try to go out at dawn, at dusk, at midday and in my phased-out state and also late at night when I’m corporeal. To no avail. Each time I would start to deteriorate and have to quickly turn around. Usually by now I would be feeling pain in my joints.”

My female looks sad. “Skogg?”

“What is wrong female?”

“What if…what if you discover you can walk out of here—and you never want to come back? You’ve been forced to live at the castle for a full year. This place essentially your prison…”

I clench my jaw and continue my relentless march toward the front gate, deciding that in this instance my actions will speak louder than words.

I stop right at the gate. “And by now I would feel myself degrading and it would force me to stop and turn around. I’ve also tried every single section of this wall and gate, looking for a weak spot. There were none.”

“Open the gate,” Emma yells out to the Ghost Hunters.

They hop to it, and don’t even look embarrassed as they whip out an illegal key and open the gate. It swings open and a huge crowd is gathered out front. It seems to have grown since the last time I was here.

They are all here to witness this momentous occasion. The red soldier freed from his confinement at Firebrook Castle. I am no longer a ghost, but a male again.

I set Emma down and grab hold of her hand. She squeezes my claw and we walk out together. Under the arch and past the barbican, through the ornate metal gates and we finally stand on the street in front of the castle.

The crowd moves back to give us room and the large gathering of Gravians, as well as other beings representing a variety of vid channels all stand in a large circle around us. Drone vid recorders float around us, live streaming what I’m about to say and I find I don’t care. I want everyone to know how I feel about this female.

The wind picks up again, lifting Emma’s dark hair in the breeze. I reach out and brush a strand behind her ear.

“You’re still here,” she breathes.

“I’m solid, alive, and free.”

“Yes, you’re free. What are you going to do now?”

I want to tell her what she means to me. How much I want to make her my bound and see her swollen with my offspring. “You are mine. You are my mate. That is why we immediately bonded and why we are addicted to each other’s scents. I love your strange human hair and I loveyou. Emma Lavigne, will you do me the honor of becoming my bound? Will you become the mother of future Blackstones? I know we have only known each other a short time, but I know you are my mate.”

Tears form in her eyes. She swallows and answers, “Skogg Blackstone, I would be honored to become your bound. Will you also become my mate and the father of my offspring? And will you live here with me at Firebrook castle, so we can restore this domicile to its former glory, together? We can live here and raise our half-human, half-Hyrrokin offspring on the planet Salo. I know this isn’t either of our original home planets, but it can be our home and I believe we can be happy here.”

“Home is wherever you are,” I respond. And then my lips come crashing down and I consume her, in front of everyone. Eventually I break free, panting.

“You’re really such a good kisser,” she breathes.

And then I look up because I hear a commotion.

“It’s the Mayor,” Emma whispers in awe.

An important-looking Gravian now stands nearby on what looks like a hastily erected stage. The crowd, and the drones, all turn toward him. “I pronounce Firebrook Castle cleansed!” he says loudly, through a voice amplifier. “This estate is no longer off-limits and is deemed admissible for habitation. The human, Emma Lavigne will retain ownership of the estate which I have learned will also allow her to claim full citizenship on Salo. And Skogg Blackstone, as her legal mate, will also be given dual citizenship!”

“Cleansed! Cleansed! Cleansed!” the crowd chants.

Then I sweep my female back up into my arms and I turn to leave.

I turn around and tell the nearby crowd and a hovering drone. “I am taking my bound back upstairs and we are going to mate all day and all night. No one is allowed on these premises for the next two diurnals. Do not expect any communication from Emma and I until then.”

I walk out the gate with my bound in my arms. The locals and the paparazzi come running behind us shouting questions. Keribel and Noriga close rank and lock the gate for us and stand with their arms crossed, heading them off and allowing us privacy.
