Hurlians seek to recapture and imprison me again in their fucked-up science lab to resume their “experiments,” so I can continue my education as their single best covert military operative.

Hells, no.

Smoke wafts from my nostrils as I stand outside this small domicile in the middle of nowhere and watch this stranger through the front window of her home.

I clench my fists.

I will kill my creators and decimate their lab, soon. Meanwhile, I must hide my own infant daughter in the home of some random human to keep her safe.

It is an affront.

I cannot leave until I know for certain my child has been fully taken in by this human I’ve chosen, and that her care is being provided for.

My child, Lyla, cried as I placed her in her basket and left her on the porch. I moved back, shrouded in the thick fog that fills this valley, hiding so the human will not see me. Lyla needs the care of an adult. If the human hadn’t immediately risen, I would’ve banged on her door or caused some other disturbance to awaken her.

I was pleased when the female awoke quickly and came out to retrieve my infant. Lyla had barely begun to cry when the human appeared in her nightgown, her eyes wild with worry.

I’d seen pictures of humans and studied their physiology, but my mouth literally dropped open at the sight of this luscious female. I’ve never, not once met a female I thought was a being I’d want to pleasure mate, but this one causes instant reactions of lust and desire to explode in my body. Long, thick, dark-reddish follicles trail from her head, which strangely I do not find disgusting. Instead, I want to rake my claws through that human hair and wrap it around my wrist. Underneath her baggy night clothing I can see the outline of her large, perky breasts and the curve of her wide hips. She is colorless and appears frail and defenseless, unable to flash-flame and without the most basic of claws or fangs. But I’ve researched this female and she did manage to leave her own home planet and arrive on Salo for university, and she’s gained dual-Gravian citizenship because she’s self-employed and able to show a viable profit. She’s smart and resourceful and has managed to do well for herself despite her alien disabilities.

I need this female’s help. She is the perfect candidate to care for Lyla.

I must keep my infant hidden while I battle the forces that want us back. This domicile is perfectly placed on the edge of a small agricultural community, and this unmated human female lives here alone. Humans are new to the four sectors, with very little in the way of space military. They are primitive and only recently became free citizens. And the humans were once held in captivity by the Hurlians—our common enemy—which gives me an immediate kinship with this strange human.

I continue to stand outside the circle of light beyond her porch and watch as she looks down upon my child with a wide, genuine smile. She’s very lucky that I’m not here for nefarious reasons. She’s not even holding a weapon and she just picks up my child without first checking the vicinity. There’s zero security here, even though she lives alone.

This beautiful female is much too trusting. I will have to install a security system for her.

A cold breeze rushes across the yard and sweeps this female’s pleasant, feminine scent across the space and into my lungs. A light growl rumbles in my chest and my shaft instantly thickens. Why do I enjoy her scent so much? Why is my body heating in response and my fangs elongating? When I matured, my creators tried to use me as sexual respite, but I refused all the naked Hurlian females they paraded before me in my cell. None of them smelled right and I deemed them too frail to withstand my Hyrrokin lust. I preferred to take care of myself in the cleansing unit rather that pleasure mate with any Hurlian females.

And then I learned I’d been kidnapped as an infant and my trainers had been lying to me, letting me think I’d been rescued me after a natural disaster that had killed my entire village. I was told I needed to remain under their training because I was special and required protection as the only one left of my kind. Assholes. No, they’d taken me from my family and secretly raised me in their remote lab. When I was a boy, they grafted wings onto my back and experimented with me, training me to be a their “winged killing machine.” My whole life was a lie. I was nothing but an experiment to those beings.

They’d recently used my seed, which they’d taken from me long ago, before I was old enough to give my full adult consent, to create my “daughter.” Lyla is my exact replica, but in an opposite gender they felt would elicit even more sympathy from me. I scented her, and I confirmed she was mine. My mind, body and soul locked onto my infant. And then they threatened her life if I did not comply with their directives to kill others.

Fire churned in my belly, and I could not contain my flash-flames. That was when I knew it was time to leave. I had to break out of there and take my child with me.

A flame-throwing Hyrrokin with wings to fly—I can destroy on the ground and above. A planetary spy and assassin they can use at will. They think they’ve trained me only for battle, but they do not know the extent of my abilities. I enjoyed flight training and I’ve helped to pluck beings from dangerous elevated situations, but I refuse to do their bidding and kill at random, and my creators are furious that I would not perform as ordered. As far as they’re concerned, I had one job—to become their compliant killing machine. But I refused. The ethical standards and morals I’d gained, despite their attempts to wipe those from my brain, will not allow me to murder innocent beings for their pleasure.

So, they created another being that I would care for, whom they could threaten to torture to trigger my compliance. Hells, no. I will never allow them to harm my child. She will not grow up in isolation, as I did. I want more for her than I had.

My body is made for warfare, but my mind is my own and it is fine-tuned to infiltrate computer systems. They do not understand the extent to which their serums and implants have made my mind the organic equivalent of a cyborg. I cannot fully integrate networks like a cyborg, but I have a natural affinity with all software, hardware and communications equipment. The creators thought they had a fail-safe firewall. They were wrong. It took a whole year for me to bypass the AI, but I was finally able to deconstruct this “firewall” and hack their security systems.

I walked out one dark night with my daughter in my arms, without a single alarm going off and without any guards noticing my absence. No one was hurt, nothing damaged. I took no weapons or equipment with me. I made it to the transporter, and we were gone, without a trace. I stole enough currency from their secret accounts to last me a lifetime, and I dug out and deactivated the trackers they’d embedded in both of us. When I arrived on Salo I flew away with my baby in my arms.

But long-term escape isn’t going to be that easy. The creators want me back and they will come after me with the entire might of the Hurlian military.

I brought my daughter to the planet Salo because my brother lives here. I’ve learned his name is Cabal Firestone and he’s the High Priest in charge of Westmore Monastery, on the famed pilgrimage route of the multigods. I’m still stunned at this revelation. The Hurlians stole me from my parents when I was a baby, and I am a Hyrrokin from the planet Tarvos. My family thought I died as an infant. They do not know I was instead captured by the Hurlians and taken to a remote mountain range on Hurlia where they’d set up their lab of depravity.

My brother is a multigod priest? My father was the former President of Tarvos and he’s now in prison for committing treason? And my mother died long ago, not long after I’d been kidnapped.

I cannot fly directly to my brother, because the Hurlians also know the High Priest is my brother and where he lives. That is the first place they will look. I must go elsewhere, somewhere completely unknown to them.

This location is perfect. I am still on the same planet as my brother, and I can easily scout out his location and contact him. Lyla will be nearby but hidden in a cozy domicile where the Hurlians will never discover her.

The female is now feeding my baby, so I walk the perimeter of the domicile and make plans for our future. An hour later, it is perfectly quiet inside. I look again through the window and see that the female and my infant are now both asleep on the couch. I open the front door that the female didn’t even bother to lock and I enter Evie’s domicile. I shake my head and lock the door behind me. Not only does my infant require protection, but so does this human.

The female is asleep with Lyla in her basket next to her. I gaze down at her, again stunned by her beauty. One of her tiny hands rests on the edge of my daughter’s basket. Another possessive growl quietly rumbles in my throat.
