I quietly turn up the domicile’s heating system because it is still much too cold for a human as well as Hyrrokin. I assume she is trying to save currency, but she will soon note a large sum in her account. Needing to save currency is no longer her concern.

I move with quiet and precision, quieter than a being of my size; it was part of my training. The tops of my black horns nearly scrape against the ceiling and the bottom edge of my white wings swipe along the floor. I keep my black, barbed tail in tight to not hit against any doorways or furniture. This domicile is small, but I notice it is kept clean and has everything a human could need. I tread, barefoot, through every room, opening every door and every closet. She has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a front living area, a small kitchen, and a dining area.

All of this is very interesting, learning how real beings live. I was raised in a lab, but I had an actual bedroom, with an extensive bathroom. I was comfortable and my furnishings were luxurious, but this was part of their big lie. They wanted me to think I had a home, and I wasn’t their prisoner, when in fact I was.

I’ve been teaching myself how to care for my infant and how to purchase what she needs. It is all very complicated but also very rewarding. I’m used to speaking very abruptly and showing only my main emotion—anger. My daughter has taught me how to show other things, like love and tenderness.

Now that I’ve scanned the layout of this home, I decide to place Lyla’s crib in the second bedroom. This is apparently the female’s home office, but it can still accommodate Lyla’s needs. The boxes for these larger items are propped outside the back door. I purse my lips, deciding I will also set up live vid of both her front and back doors, upgrade her locks and the strength of the doors. I cannot watch her domicile the full span of each diurnal; I will need to often depart and deal with the Hurlian threat and also to communicate with my brother. But I’ll need to know these two are safe while I’m gone.

I bring in the larger items and set up a changing table for Lyla, along with warm wipes and stacks of diapers, as well as the diaper incinerator. I purchased everything a baby would need and I’m loading up the female’s house so she can easily care for my daughter.

Yes, the female will awaken and know someone has been here, but this cannot be helped. I cannot leave without knowing she’s properly supplied to care for Lyla. I hated watching the female carry all the boxes I’d left on the front porch inside by herself. She is delicate and, if allowed, I would have brought them in for her. But I cannot let her know of me yet. Evie Jones cannot be dragged into my chaos any further than she already is; I need for her to be able to innocently stick with her story of “I’m watching this baby for the mother, and she will return soon.” If her neighbors or peacekeepers question, this will be her answer. I do not know yet the extend of the Hurlian’s retaliation and I must be careful of any hint of my presence being known. If the authorities question why this baby has wings, the human will shrug and just hold Lyla tighter. Her ignorance of my true situation will protect her until I can return.

Evie and Lyla both sleep right through my work. The night fades and the suns rise, and I know I must leave soon before they awaken.

Before I leave, I go into the kitchen and set everything up for the female there too. After I’ve finished opening and closing all of her drawers and cabinets, I learn she enjoys dark roast Traq. I will purchase more of this for her later.

I’ve never had the ability to form any type of bond with another adult being. My creators saw me as nothing more than a lab experiment. I want to care for both my infant as well as this human. She appears to have a favorite cup? I put that exact cup in the brewer and preprogram it for her so her drink will be hot and ready when she awakens. Lyla will awaken and need to be changed and fed again—and the female will need Traq to wake up and begin her work. I also leave a warm bottle of formula for Lyla ready and preprogrammed in the new food dispenser I installed.

I pause and set up a communication system between me and this female. I leave a note she will find when she awakens, and I give her the ability to respond with anything she might need.

Now I must go. But I will return shortly and check on her again.

I step outside the front door, take a deep breath, and spread my wings. Then I run and take a flying leap off the porch. My wings dig deep into the air and lift me from the ground. The fog is thick and covers my movements—another reason why I chose this domicile on the edge of town. I break through the foggy layer and into the clear air, curving away and up into the clouds.

I look down below and a grim smile spreads across my features.

I will find and destroy my creators. They will not have the ability to take me again, or anyone else. Evie and Lyla will be safe. I will keep them protected, even if it means my own death.
