I blink and open my eyes and almost pass out with shock because I appear to lying on the floor where I must have fallen, with my head in Lucas’s lap. It feels a little awkward as he looks down at me with a mixture of concern and amusement and I close my eyes and whisper faintly, “I am so embarrassed.”

The other voice speaks, making me open my eyes to put a face to it, and I see a man not much older than Lucas looking at me with concern.

“I’m Doctor Steele, Lucas called me when you fell. You hit your head on the table on your way down, you may have concussion.”

“I have a headache.”

The doctor smiles. “I’m sure you have. Can you stand?”

“If you take these heels off, I’ll try.”

The doctor nods and makes to help me and Lucas snaps, “I’ll do it.”

I don’t miss the surprise on the doctor’s face as Lucas shifts so I am sitting on his lap and growls, “Bend your leg.”

“Oh, it’s…”

“Goddamn it woman, bend your leg and let me remove your shoes.”

The doctor shakes his head as I quickly do as he says, and just feeling Lucas’s fingers against my skin makes my heart skip a beat.

He removes the shoes and my feet dance for joy and I exhale with relief. “Thank God.”

“You’re welcome.”

Lucas grins and I can’t help but giggle and for a moment it feels nice. He’s taking care of me, not scaring me, and I’m surprised at how good that feels.

In one swift move, he stands with me in his arms and places me gently on the chair where I was sitting before and for some reason I’m sad about that as he straightens up and looks at me with concern.

The doctor says quickly, “She should get checked out at the hospital, she may have concussion.”

Lucas looks angry and I feel like such a liability.

“Is that really necessary?” I say it quickly to try to relieve some of the tension and before he can answer, Lucas says, “Of course it’s necessary. I’m taking no chances.”

The doctor nods. “I’ll arrange an ambulance.”

“You are kidding—right?”

I stare at them in surprise and Lucas shakes his head. “No, I’m not and we’ll take the helicopter.”

“Now I know you’re kidding.”

I stare at him in total disbelief and the doctor rolls his eyes. “A little unnecessary, I mean it’s only a short drive away.”

“We will take the helicopter.”

Lucas lifts his phone and barks instructions into it, and the doctor kneels before me and smiles. “Humor him, he’s in shock just as much as you, and that man doesn’t do shock well.”

I’m so surprised and look across at Lucas, who snaps his phone shut.

“They’re waiting for us. Do you need a ride, Luke?”

“No, I’m good and if I’m quick, I’ll make dessert.”

He grins and I notice he’s dressed in a tux and feel sorry that we obviously interrupted his evening.

“I’ll call ahead and tell them to expect you.”

Turning to me, he says gently, “It’s just a precaution, nothing to worry about.”

As he turns to leave, I think on what he says because little does he know, I have everything to worry about.
