Luckily, he has a lot to occupy him and could probably do with me being out of his space, anyway. I know he’s worried about everything it seems, and a little distance will make things easier—on us both.

As soon as I step inside my shop, my world rights itself. I’m back and it feels so good. Maybe I’m happier because I know I’m heading back to Lucas at the end of the day. It feels good knowing he’s there for me, waiting and promising me an evening of more pleasure than a body can surely stand.

Charlie seems like a good guy and he smiles. “It’s all clear, Miss. Quinn.”

“Please call me Ella.” I smile and he relaxes a little.

“Ella.”

“So, Charlie, this is going to be a bit boring for you, so why don’t I make you a coffee and set up a movie or something on my iPad?”

“No need, Ella, I can make the coffee and I wouldn’t dream of any distractions while I do my job.”

He winks and I smile to myself. Of course, they are never off duty; I wonder how they cope with the boredom.

I turn my attention to business and groan when I see the orders piling up. The result of taking a few weeks off is coming back to bite me, and as I make my way through the list, I can tell it’s going to be a busy afternoon. Really, I should work long into the night to get them done, but I promised Lucas I would be back by 7pm at the latest and it wouldn’t be fair on Charlie to keep him hanging around that long.

So, as he takes up residence on the front desk, I head out the back and start doing what I do best. Copying things.
