Ryder shakes his head. “I intercepted this because we have tabs on his system. This came from the offices of his gutter press. It will have been passed by him for authorization and obviously he agreed, so…”

“It’s him.”

“Not necessarily.”

“For fuck’s sake, Ryder, just tell me already because I am so fucking angry right now.”

Miss. Baxter chooses this minute to head into the room balancing a tray of coffee and more snacks and it takes all of my control not to fling it at her.

Instead, we wait until she leaves and Ryder says in a low voice, “I’m heading to Media Corp for an unannounced visit. Nobody must know we have any prior knowledge of this. I just wanted you to be aware of it and lie low for a few days, don’t go out and Lexi has been informed to keep you covered.”

He smirks, and it’s obvious nothing gets past this bastard and I sigh. “Let me know when it’s sorted and if this article hits the press, tell Dexter fucking Prince that I’m coming for him myself.”

Ryder nods and takes hold of his coffee and raises it in a salute.

“If it’s him, you’ll be second in line after me and there won’t be anything left to play with.”

The seriousness of the situation hits us hard and for a moment we fall silent as the news sinks in. Is it really Dexter who’s causing these events? I’d be surprised if it was but I’m not stupid enough to trust even those closest to me because in this organization, expect the unexpected.

Cancelingthe rest of my appointments, I leave an unhappy assistant to deal with the fallout. If what Ryder says is true, matters will be coming to a head soon enough and I can carry on my day from home. I feel an overwhelming urgency to be with Lexi right now, and as Dobson brings the car round, I make a few urgent texts to my team. I will be working from home and expect a full report by close of business tonight on the state of the market and what can be causing the nerves.

All the way home, I think about what is happening here. Lucas is struggling to keep the money rolling; his investments are being questioned and Washington is starting to make noises. Then there are the markets, where the share prices are falling, which causes panic, making the federal bank nervous and bombarding my office for updates every fifteen minutes. The world as we know it is shaking and it will take a miracle to deflect the blast, and I can only hope Ryder finds out soon because I’m not sure we are capable of dealing with the fallout.

Then I think of him. The final King, so far removed from life as we know it and yet, could it be him? Could this all be coming from the man at the top? If I’m sure of anything, it’s not him, so protect the King at all costs, and I have to put my faith in Ryder to finish the job.
