“It all points to him.”

For a moment, we pause and allow the enormity of our situation to sink in. The King. The actual fucking King. It doesn’t make sense.

“What now?” I feel defeated before I even ask the question because if he wants us out of the picture, we had better start packing or planning our funerals.

“We go to the wedding as planned.”

“And what is the plan when this shit blows up in our faces?”

“I’m working on that.”

“Well, work hard, my friend, because time is most definitely running out. The weddings in a few days, for Christ’s sake.”

“Which is a good thing because we have a few days head start.”

For some reason, the grim determination on his face settles my jagged nerves and I sigh heavily. “What do you need me to do?”

He leans back in his seat and smiles. “Put on a suit, order some flowers and call the gift company because nothing has changed. We go to the wedding and act as we always have done.”

Nodding, I throw him my usual smirk. “Do you even own a suit?”

He laughs. “I may have one gathering dust in my closet.”

“And the other kings, do they know?”

“Of course. We go separately as planned and meet at the wedding. Keep to protocol, do what we have to do and hope it all blows up in our faces.”

“That’s your plan?” Shaking my head, I grab my glass and empty it in one gulp and Ryder grins. “It’s what I hope will happen.”

“And you will do…”

“Nothing.”

“Great, how can this plan ever fail, we’re all going to die?”

He laughs. “I said I’m doing nothing, there’s a difference.”

Sighing, I know there’s nothing much coming my way from him, anyway, and as he stands, he nods. “Thanks for the drink. Now it’s been nice, but we need to return home and pack.”

“I’m honored you came all this way to tell me in person.”

“I had business in the area and anyway, you know that’s how it works, trust no one…”

“And never betray that trust.”

I finish our motto and he grins. “Until the big event.”

He leaves and I watch the door close and think about what he said.

Two days head start, that’s not good odds. Things are moving so fast and somebody wants us gone. We are like cattle to slaughter and now our motto needs to stand up and be counted because if we’ve only got a few more days to live, God help us and all that we stand for.
