CHAPTER FOUR

Daniel wandered through the lobby of Dufort Waikiki nodding and acknowledging the Aloha, Mr. Dufort greetings.

He’d flown into Oahu on his private jet the day before, arriving early evening. It had been a restless trip.

He’d reluctantly drafted an email to his lawyers asking them to draw up a prenup. It was better to be prepared, even though he hoped this was a precaution.

Duke Johnson had video called him just before they landed. “What the hell? Is this serious, or are you messing with me?”

“Do I ever joke around about my money?” Daniel had asked in response, arching his brow.

“Jesus,” his lawyer of the past ten years had replied.

Once he’d updated Duke with as much as he could share, the man had shaken his head. “What a fuckup. Okay, I’ll get something drafted and send to you in a few days.”

“I don’t want anyone else working on this. Fuck the client privilege bullshit, this has to remain high level.” Duke was an owner and partner at his firm and his rates reflected it. Daniel was happy to pay the big bucks, even for something as simple as a prenup. Not that it was a problem for a man with the type of wealth he had—but he wasn’t risking anyone finding out about this.

“Yeah, of course, Daniel. I’ll get something to you in the next few days so you can speed things along at your end.”

He didn’t want to speed things along.

He didn’t want to get married.

To Nadia or anyone.

“Like I said, it’s just a precaution. I’m hoping to sort this out.”

“How?” Duke asked. “Sounds like Mackenzie has you over a damn barrel.”

Yeah, he did.

“I may have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but I also shoot with silver bullets, Duke. Never forget that.”

When had he given anyone the impression, he took shit lying down? He wasn’t known as a soft touch in business, and that wasn’t about to start now. Extortion or otherwise.

His lawyer stared at him for a long moment.

“Yeah, all right. Just be careful. I might be your lawyer, but god, don’t tell me anymore. I’m not saying I don’t want to see the asshole taken down a notch, though.”

Daniel breathed in the scents of his Waikiki hotel. There was something unique about it which always felt happy. Hell, it was Hawaii. How could it not be?

“Good morning, Mr. Dufort,” a Dufort staff member greeted him.

“Aloha,” he said, nodding with a small smile. Right now he felt like punching a wall, but there was no reason to let his employees see that.

Perhaps when his contact at the private security firm returned his call, he’d feel more in control. Because if someone was trying to fuck him over, he was more than happy to do the same in return.

You had to fight fire with fire.

And Black Hawke Security was packing. Sometimes literally. They were a bunch of former-Marines. Black ops. That kind of crew. In fact, Josh Hawke was a former Navy SEAL. Daniel knew enough about the guy to know he was a wealthy mother fucker because of his grandfather’s investments. He’d left the SEALs and started Black Hawke Security with Aidan Black.

Hence the name.

They were the go-to guys when shit got ugly.

They had contacts and access to things the law didn’t, or couldn’t, touch to get the job done.

Daniel had reached out to them about a few small jobs, but nothing this sensitive.
