“I just—”

“Never expected to feel like this?” he asked. “Me neither.”

“We can’t—”

“I know.” He stopped her. Not wanting to hear it.

“So we just carry on.” She nodded.

No.

No!

He had no intention of doing that, but until he could present Olivia with a solid plan, he had to keep his thoughts to himself.

He didn’t want to panic her.

“We take it day by day.” He cupped her chin. How was he going to get through tonight, tomorrow, this week, or any day without those eyes on his, those lips on his? “I would do anything for you, Liv. Anything.”

She nodded. “I know.”

Her phone beeped.

“Uber is downstairs.”

He nodded, hating that he couldn’t even see her at home. But if her psycho ex saw them, it would destroy her life.

Asshole.

“Text me when you arrive,” Fletch said, kissing her one last time.

When he straightened, she wiped away a tear, and he silently cursed. They stared, both wanting to say more. Then her damn phone beeped again.

Fletcher pressed the elevator button, and it opened. Olivia stepped in. He followed, kissed her again, and then stepped back.

“Bye,” she said, lifting her hand in an awkward wave.

“See you tomorrow.” He plunged his hands into his pockets.

“Yup.”

Then the doors closed.

And his home suddenly felt cold and empty.
