She stared at the floor.

“Olivia!” he shouted, and her eyes shot to his, rich with emotion. “Don’t tell me last weekend meant nothing to you. I was fucking inside you. I saw the way you looked at me. I could feel you.”

Her hand flew to her mouth.

Fletcher stood there, waiting. Fucking waiting for her to come to him. Instead, she shook her head and refused to look at him.

“I’m not asking you to choose between me and Sammy. I’m asking you to trust me to help you. To trust me to protect you.” His voice was thick with anger and hurt.

She continued to shake her head as tears poured down her face.

Fletcher squeezed his fists, tensed his entire body to stop from going to her. His every instinct screamed to protect her.

But she wouldn’t let him.

“Fletch... I can’t.”

“I can afford the best lawyers, the best security. I can move you and Sammy in with me. Hell, I would even fucking marry you, to protect you.”

Olivia’s eyes shot to his, her mouth falling open.

“What?” she gasped.

He took a step toward her.

“I’m falling in love with you, Olivia.” He spoke more quietly. “Don’t push me away.”

When he was a step from pulling her into his arms, she whipped away.

God damn it.

“I can’t. I can’t do this.” She turned her back on him and cried into her hands.

He stood staring at her back, pain lacing through his veins. She had rejected him. He had all but proposed to her. Told her he was in love with her, and she’d turned from him.

He began nodding to himself like a madman, as he looked around the room at everything and nothing.

She didn’t love him.

It was clear she felt something, but it wasn’t love.

This was why he didn’t do relationships. He’d seen the pain in his mother’s eyes every day of his childhood. Now here he was, like an idiot, falling for someone who would never love him.

His heart went deathly cold and hardened inside his chest.

“I’ll need your resignation in writing.” His voice was devoid of any emotion. “Given the circumstances there will be no need to work out your notice period.”

She turned, wiping her eyes, and went to speak. He held up a hand and shook his head.

“Goodbye, Olivia.”
