“Tell Harper I’ll stop by later and check in.”

“Will do. I’m out.”

“See ya.”

Once again, I’m shut in the office and get back to the papers at hand. I go over them until I’ve memorised every layout and every name in each salon. It doesn’t bother me these people will be out of work. Effie shouldn’t have come for us. We would have left well enough alone.

Because of her, I was shot, and Rayna came close to losing both her parents. Coming for the club is bad enough, but when it nearly reaches my daughter, all bets are off.

Sitting at the bar, I watch JJ and Harper drive through the open gates from the CCTV screens. Darkness is creeping up on us and I stroll outside and meet them by her car. Harper climbs out and I wrap my arms around her.

“How are you doing?” I ask.

“I’m good but I hate leaving him there on his own.”

“I hear ya, but you know he’s being looked after. You need your strength too.”

“I know,” she says, rolling her eyes. “That’s what everyone keeps telling me.”

“How is my nephew?”

The smile that creeps across her face makes me feel good. She’s been through so much in her life and for the most part, I haven’t been any good to her. Even after her ordeal with Ellis, I wasn’t around for her. I was wrapped up in my own grief. I told myself she had JJ and she would be okay.

“He’s getting strong, Leo. He should be home in a few days.”

Her excitement courses through me and I grin. For once, it’s genuine.

“That’s real good. Holly and I will bring Rayna around to meet him. I think Holly took her shopping the other day to get him a present.”

Dad and Sparky walk out of the bar, and she excuses herself to go over and talk to them, something about photos.

“She’s changing,” JJ murmurs, coming to stand beside me.

“Nah, I’m pretty sure she’s just happy.” Thinking of Luca, I add, “There’s a lot of it going around at the moment.”

He glances at me and snorts. “Yeah, you’ve been smiling a lot the last couple of days too. We may have to get the water checked out. I think someone’s trying to turn us into fucking hippies or some shit.”

“Well, what I’m about to ask you will have you barring any water consumption.”

“Go on.”

“I want everyone in high spirits before we attack. Set up a drinks’ run and get the old ladies to dress the place up a bit. We’re gonna party before the attack and for one night, we’re just gonna be us. After, we’ll celebrate Gunner coming home and we’ll find our place.”

“Sounds like a plan to me, brother.”

Slipping into the office, I pull out my pack of smokes and fall into the chair and light up. I still don’t have a plan for the salon next to the shelter and it’s weighing on my mind. Inhaling long and hard on the little poisonous stick, I exhale even harder.

I groan when the door opens and Zara walks in, closing it behind her. I haven’t got the inclination to deal with her tonight. And it doesn’t help that when I look at her now, all I see is Holly looking up at me as I drive into her, holding her in my arms.

My dad used to tell me there were two kinds of women—one you play with and one you marry. At the time, I remember laughing, not understanding why you’d get married when there were so many options of who to play with. But then India crept in, not even knowing she was, and I understood. Zara is who you play with and now, Holly is the woman you marry. I’m on dangerous fucking ground with her, and while I can’t give her anything, I can’t stop myself.

With her tits pushed up, on the verge of spilling out of her top, and her skirt barely covering her ass, it’s obvious what Zara came in here for.

“Not now.”

Holly fills my head and I get a twitch, knowing exactly how she feels under me. This is so fucked up. There’s a hot piece of ass seeking my dick out and I feel nothing. I could literally stand, bend her over the desk and fuck her till I come, but I recoil from the thought.

“Don’t be like this, Leo. You know how good I feel.”
