Page 46 of His End Game

It’s all so domesticated between us, and I smile, nodding, and turning back to the eggs before they burn.

Breakfast is light and Leo even laughs a few times. For a moment, it’s like we’re a family and I quickly push the thought far from my mind. He’s given me what he can, and I’ve accepted. I’m not going to let my heart run away with itself.

“I’ll do the dishes while you pack you and Ray a bag.”

His hand brushes against mine as he takes my plate and again, I don’t race away with fairy tale hopes and dreams.

It doesn’t take me long to pack our things and when I head back downstairs, he’s got Rayna into her boots and has her jacket on.

“I’ve turned everything off and locked up. You got everything you need?” he asks, passing me my jacket.

“Yeah, Rayna’s gonna need a new wardrobe soon. She’s outgrowing everything.”

“I’ll leave you my card and you can order it all online. Have it delivered to the club.”

And like that, the easy-going conversation, life living, whatever this is right now, continues. During the drive to the club, I wish he’d reach over and slide his hand on my thigh. But again, I squash the need for more.

I squeeze my hands between my thighs and do my best to forget he saw my burns this morning. I’ve been so careful not to let anyone see them. Soon after I began looking after Rayna, I had nightmares she would somehow see them and be too afraid to come near me. That I’d be a monster to her. But it’s another trait she gets from her dad. She isn’t bothered by them. She’s never questioned why I wear gloves all the time. To her, it’s just what I’m about.

“Dad’s planning on building houses out back behind the club.”

His voice breaks the silence.

“That will certainly give him something to do. Will you move once they’re built?”

“It’s the perfect location for us. No driving out to the cabin and back. You’d always be close, and I wouldn’t have to worry so much, or pack you both up whenever I leave town.”

I don’t think he realises how it makes me feel when he refers to me and him and Rayna as us. And I don’t say anything because I know he includes me as his nanny. I’m like the couch you take whenever you move. Not that he fucks the couch.

I force the thoughts from my head. He was straight with me. I’m not just the nanny he fucks. He appreciates everything I do for his daughter, and he said he didn’t want to hurt me. Fuck. I wish I could get out of my head, just for five minutes.

“Should I still take Rayna to visit Kristen while you’re gone?” I ask him as he drives into the club parking lot. Every Friday, Nina and Sebastian join them, and Rayna always comes home overexcited and happy.

“Yeah, but I’ll send the prospect with you.”

He carries our bags into the main house and as I get Rayna out of her car seat and put her down on her feet, I sense anger. Keeping a hold of her hand, I stand and look around.

Zara is getting on the back of a brother’s bike but she’s staring straight at the house. At me.

All I feel for her is sorrow. Our friendship from school doesn’t exist anymore and I’m okay with that. I get the hint that she’d trample over me or anyone if it meant she could lay claim on Leo.

I trust Leo when he told me we’d be exclusive without actually being together. One thing about Leo that is a guarantee—he doesn’t lie.

Rayna’s hand slips from mine and it feels wrong. I spin around ready to grab her back when I catch myself and step back.

“You okay?” Leo asks, holding her in his arms.

Taking a shaky breath, I nod. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

“My card is in my wallet in my back pocket. Get it out, will ya.”

Zara’s eyes are like pin pricks all over my back as I slide my hand down Leo’s ass and retrieve his wallet.

It was only yesterday that I told her nothing was going on and now that isn’t my truth. But for Leo, I’d lie because he doesn’t want his homelife being spoken about, especially to the likes of Zara. And knowing her, she’s already jumping to her own conclusions at this scene.

Digging out his card, I peek out through my lashes and find her scowling our way. It’s not like she knows anything so it must just be for Leo.

“Is there a reason Zara is throwing daggers at you?” I ask quietly.
