“I told her I’d ban her from the club if she ever approached me again.”

My heart doesn’t pound, and it doesn’t thrum too fast. It’s like it stops altogether. I’d try to hide my smile, but I don’t care.

“Yeah, I thought you’d like that.”

“Like what? We’re not at the cabin. It’s not my business here, is it?” I smart.

This must be what it’s like to feel like walking on clouds. I’ve heard the expression many times, but I’ve never felt it myself.

Rolling his eyes, he passes Rayna over to me.

“I need to get over there,” he says, jerking his thumb toward the bar. “Shout if you need me.”

“Will do.”

He kisses Rayna on the cheek and turns his back. We watch him until he disappears.

“What shall we do today?”

Playing with my hair, she has no suggestions.

“Shall we go find Grandma Alannah?”

Again, no response.

“Shall we do some finger painting?”

Nothing.

“Shall we bake cookies?”

“Yep, yep, yep.”

Kyla and Victoria are sitting at the kitchen table when we walk in and Rayna wiggles in my arms, wanting to be let down. She heads over to Victoria and gives her no choice but to pick her up.

“I saw Leo bring your bags in. Are you staying here while they head out?” Kyla asks.

“Yeah.”

“Alannah and Bonnie have gone into town to pick up more groceries. You’ll need to let them know if you want anything specific.”

I smile and dig out my phone. I don’t personally need anything, but Rayna loves her grapefruit in the mornings with her breakfast.

Chapter Thirteen

Leo

For the first time in a long time, the brothers are mellow—a calm before the storm. I can feel the thread weaving through each and every one of us tightening, connecting us into a fight that we’ll face as one, because we’re connected by more than the patch. The prospect walks by, his arms full of guns, and disappears outside.

This is my chance to prove my worth as their president and the usual sinking feeling in my gut isn’t there. Everything inside me is screaming this is the right path to take. Then the little voice in the back of my mind says,it’s the only path we can take.

Zach approaches me and points to the door and for me to follow. We step outside and he sinks down onto on the nearby bench. He lights up and the smell of pot hits me. It’s been a lifetime since I’ve seen him light a joint.

He offers me a hit, but I shake my head, choosing to light a cigarette instead.

“You good?”

“Nina’s been on me all day. She says she has a bad feeling.”
