Page 56 of His End Game

By the time I’m processed on seven bullshit charges and shoved into a holding cell, Mason is already pacing the small space and Dex is lying on the narrow bench.

“Where’s Zach?” I ask, knocking Dex’s leg to make room for me to sit.

“Haven’t seen him since we got here.”

Mason stops, asking, “What the fuck is going on, Leo?”

“My best guess is Effie.”

“Great, we’ve been set up.” He huffs.

“That’s my guess. Question is, how did she know where we were?”

Mason returns to pacing and I hang my head in my hands to shield myself from it. We’re all on edge and this is his way of dealing with it, so I block out the annoyance.

The door opens and Zach’s shoved inside. At least the four of us are together, for now.

“I need to call Dad, get him to get us a lawyer,” I say, keeping my voice down.

“I’ve already called. He’s sending someone. Should be here soon,” Mason says.

“This can’t stick. We’ll still be home by midnight,” Zach says.

I wait for my turn and dial Holly’s number once I’m led to the phones. With the club already knowing our predicament, I need to speak to her.

She answers on the second ring, and I imagine her holding her phone, waiting on me to call.

“Hey, I haven’t got long, but I wanted to make sure you’re okay. I heard about your dad.”

She sniffs and takes a shaky breath.

“I’m fine.”

Her and her being fine, it drives me crazy.

“How’s Ray?”

“She’s okay. Your mom’s giving her a bath. I heard what happened. When do you think you’ll be home?”

“I don’t know, but soon I hope.”

“Leo—”

“Until I get home, kiss Rayna for me and tell her I love her, and… I’ll call you again when I can.”

“Okay.”

The line goes dead, and I slam the receiver down a little too hard. I’m led back to the holding cell, and I turn to my brothers, and say, “Now we wait.”

An hour passes and the boredom is already too much to bear. The door opens but none of us make a move to stand. A guard fills the doorway and zeros in on me.

“Jackson, On your feet.”

Him not asking for any of the others makes me wary, but I’m not going to let him see.

I rise to my feet as he instructs, “Keep your hands in your waistband, take them out and I’ll cuff you.”

I do as he says, and he grunts, “Follow me.”
