My bullet is for Effie. Mason’s bullet is for her right-hand man. Dex and Zach’s bullets are for the two other guards she has with her. The sun has moved, and our view is no longer obscured by the sun glaring against the storefront windows.

My phone vibrates in my cut pocket, and I dig it out, all the while keeping my eye on Effie as she works the crowd out front of her newest business.

Letting you know, Holly’s Dad died this afternoon. Holly’s back at the club. Your mom is keeping an eye on her.

I’m glad Grim let me know but it’s not like I can do anything from the city.

Shit. I have no fucking idea how she’s going to be with his death. She hasn’t had contact with her parents in the last couple of years, but I’m not blind to the fact she has a lot of underlying issues going on. All I need is one look at her to see what’s really going on with her but that’ll have to wait till tonight.

“Something we need to know?” Dex asks, coming to stand next to me.

“No, personal shit.”

Keeping my eye on Effie, she approaches the front of the salon. Her tight skirt couldn’t possibly get any tighter and it’s a shame a hot woman like her has no ass. She’s our enemy and I wouldn’t hesitate to put a bullet in her, but I can still appreciate beauty.

“Showtime,” I say. “You all know your places. Let’s go.”

Sliding my phone back into my pocket, I pull my gloves on and pick up my shooter from the holdall. From the window of the third-floor apartment, I’ll be the one to make the shot. From the other window, Mason, Zach, and Dex will take out her lackeys standing off behind her. If this goes to plan, no one else will lose their lives.

“The second we have a clear shot, take it. They won’t know where the shots are coming from and in the disarray, we get out of here and get home. Understood?”

The three of them nod and with another glance around to make sure we’ve left nothing behind, I’m good to leave. The apartment is empty and waiting for the next tenants to move in. Zach and Slade had done well finding it. It’s been perfect to watch over Effie and keep an eye on the street.

Tucking the gun into the back of my waistband, I hold my finger up for silence. On the other side of the door, I hear numerous footsteps rushing up the stairs.

Fuck.

“We’ve got company,” I whisper, and we all step back.

The footsteps fall silent and a second later, someone tries kicking down the door. Shooting Zach a what-the-fuck glare, he shrugs and we focus on the door. No one knows we’re here. There should be no one outside our door.

We all raise our guns and on the third attempt, the door frame cracks, and the door flies open.

Cops.

They flood in, their guns already aiming for us. They holler for us to lie face down on the floor. The small space becomes chaotic and my heart thumps in my chest.

Zach, Mason, and Dex look to me, waiting on our next move. Apart from taking out the law, there’s nothing for us to do but do as instructed.

I nod and we all drop to the floor. The moment we’re not a threat to them, they pile on us, and we’re cuffed and searched before we can make sense of how this is happening.

Our shooters are taken from us and the whole thing is strange. They didn’t announce themselves like they usually would. No one’s read us our Miranda rights. Hell, they haven’t even told us why they’ve targeted us or how they even knew we were here.

“Unregistered weapons, not a good start,” one cop says, his eyes dropping to our hands. “Wearing gloves in this weather? Strange choice of fashion or it’s because you’re not wanting to leave evidence.”

None of us say a word. I don’t take my eyes off the cop and the manipulation of power shines from the fucking asshole.

“Well, I think we’re going to take you all in on charges of… threatening police officers, holding unlicensed guns, breaking and entering on this dwelling, and I’ll think up a few more charges on the way to county.”

This is bullshit but I won’t let him have the satisfaction of seeing how much he’s pissing me off.

We just have to ride this out, get to county, and get our call. As soon as Dad can get us a lawyer, we’ll walk and then I’ll be pissed we missed our shot with Effie.

We’re led down the stairs and out the back. Their cars aren’t out front like I’d expect. Fucking hell. Effie Rathbone, somehow, has set us up.

Before I’m shoved into the back of the van, I catch Mason’s eye, and nod twice.

I know it’s his code with Myles for say nothing. He looks at me like I’m slow for having to state it. I’ll get to the bottom of this and when I do, blood will flood the streets of Dog City.
