“Well, since you wanna get home to your nanny, I’ll behave myself.”

This fucker’s lucky if I don’t get up off my ass and land a right hook to his jaw.

“Dex, take Mason for a walk. Make sure he doesn’t find himself in any trouble.”

“I’m not a dog,” Mason grunts.

“I’m well aware.”

Dex chucks his cards down and shoves Mason out of our cell. I take Dex’s place and take a look at his hand. He was never winning this round.

“It’s not any of my business, but if there is something going on between you and Holly, you don’t need to hide it.”

I should’ve sent Zach out with Mason.

“You’re right, it’s none of your business.”

“Leo, you being president now shows you that life moves on. No one expects you to be alone forever. You remember I told you that one day you’d move on, you may try to fight it, probably feel guilty? If that day is now and with Holly, it’ll only be because of you who holds back.”

Losing my patience, I snap, “You think I’d worry about what people think if there was something?”

“Yeah, I do. Because my sister was a part of this club. She was a part of me, of my dad. All the old-timers watched her grow up. She wasn’t just yours as much as you’d like to think so. There’s not a day I don’t think about her, and it kills me every time I see Rayna and India has no idea about the little girl she birthed. You know when you do meet someone and bring them around the club, all eyes will be on you, but not in the way you’re thinking. Brothers just wanna see you whole again.”

I swallow the truth he’s spewing. “I don’t think I’ll ever be whole. I’ve been fucking Zara, and do you know what happens after?”

“You get your junk tested?” He snorts.

“I puked. I had to be drunk off my ass to even get my dick out in the first place. I can count on one hand how many times I went with her and each time I hated myself. Holly… we’ve been together a few times, and it felt… well, I didn’t puke after.”

He stops shuffling the cards and sighs. “Doesn’t that tell you something?”

Taking a deep breath, I take the deck from him and scoop up the cards lying on the table.

“It tells me we’re turning into a couple of women, sitting here talking about this shit.”

Rolling his eyes, he snaps, “Shut up and deal the cards.”

We’re sitting in the visitor’s room and JJ dumps candy bars and cans of soda on the table.

“Talk to me,” I say.

We don’t have long. One thing being locked up has taught me is that time slips by so fast when you’re on a visit. The rest of the time, it drags.

“The brothers are good, every time that bitch leads us to a dead end, their drive grows stronger—”

I know all this. I get to the point. “What about the prospect?”

“Shane? What about him?”

“I told him to prove himself the day we attacked. Through all this shit we’ve been through, I hadn’t even thought about him. Did he prove himself?”

“Yeah, the fucker was like a thief in the night. At one point, we had company and before I could get my gun out, he had the guy down and out. He had our backs, no questions asked, no hesitation.”

That’s good. It’s what I expected from him.

“Why the need to know about him?”

“I said I’d hold a vote once we were done in the city. That’ll be up to you now, but don’t do it till I say.”
