Page 8 of His End Game

He's sitting up this morning and Zara’s nowhere to be seen. My heart rate calms, and I dump Rayna’s bag on the chair before settling her on Leo’s bed. She’s careful around him and her smile returns. She truly is a daddy’s girl.

“Hey, sweetheart.” Leo beams at her and I take a seat at the bottom of his bed.

I dig out my phone and start scrolling through my social media accounts. I haven’t posted since before I was attacked, but I keep up to date on everyone else. I get to watch them live their lives and live through them. It’s the closest I get to the outside world.

“You just gonna sit there ignoring me?” Leo grunts and I look up to find him staring at me.

“I’m not ignoring you. I’m staying out of the way while you spend time with your daughter. I’m only the nanny, remember?”

The bitterness oozes from me and I cringe inwardly. I hate that I let him see how he gets to me.

“So why don’t you tell me how my daughter’s been since last night?”

Powering down my phone, I shuffle in my chair and say, “Your mom had to deal with her last night because she wouldn’t listen to a word I said. All she wanted was you, and no bribe in the land could calm her down.”

He looks to Rayna and lifts his brows. “Were you naughty for Holly last night?”

“Love you, Daddy.”

I roll my eyes. The little angel certainly has the devil’s blood running through her and yet I can’t help but laugh.

“She was asleep by the time I got back and then she slept through till this morning.”

He frowns. “You got back from where?”

“I went over to the bar. Had a drink.”

I keep the fact I drank water to myself.

“You never go to the bar alone.”

“I wasn’t alone. I had a nice chat with Shane.”

“Who the fuck is Shane?” The creases at the corner of his eyes deepen and I sit forward.

“What’s your problem? He’s your club’s prospect.”

This information doesn’t smooth his glare, and it feels like I’m spinning.

“So while I pay you to watch over my daughter, you were having a drink with a guy?”

“Oh please, Leo, he was minding the bar. It’s his job to talk. Anyway, it was nice of Zara to stop by last night.”

The bitterness grows and I keep my eyes locked on his. His glare fades and he stones over.

“She wasn’t here long.”

That’s all he says.

“Still, to come all this way for you, it’s nice. I’m surprised she isn’t here now.”

Shaking his head, I curse myself for not letting this go. He’s not mine.

“She knows her place,” is all he says, and I hear the silentyou know yours.

I turn my phone back on and busy myself on Instagram while he spends time with Rayna. Keeping the volume down, I switch to TikTok, and don’t notice the time slipping away.

Luca and Victoria enter the room and I sit up straighter.
