Putting Rayna to bed, I drag a blanket off the bottom of the bed and slide down beside her. Surprisingly, the dead weight of hope lifts and I drift off to sleep with ease.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Leo

Istruggle to open my eyes and I feel sick every time I try to move, but I sense it’s still early. Rolling onto my side, I reach out for Holly, but I feel nothing but sheets. Cracking one eye open, I realise I’m alone. Her side isn’t even warm. It’s just after eight and I can’t hear Rayna. Holly should still be sleeping. Hauling my ass out of bed, my head pounds as I take care of my needs in the bathroom and brush my teeth.

A chill runs over me, and I dip back into Holly’s room and dig out a pair of sweats and a hoodie from the wardrobe. Wondering where she’s at, I check in on Rayna before going to find her. She’s curled up on the floor beside Rayna’s bed, her arm acting as a pillow and a thin blanket covering her.

What the fuck?

Was Ray sick last night? I drank so much, I don’t remember. Ray and Holly were sick at the beginning of the week, but Mom assured me it was a twenty-four-hour thing, and they were fine now.

Creeping across the room, I smile down at my daughter sleeping peacefully and crouch down beside Holly. She wakes with a start but relaxes when she sees me.

“What you doing sleeping on the floor?” I whisper.

“Everyone was drinking. I didn’t want her being woken and wandering off.”

This woman thinks of everything when it comes to my kid, though I get the feeling it’s more than that.

I help her up and lead her back to her bedroom. The house is quiet, no doubt most people still crashed out from last night. I let go of her hand and she busies herself getting clean clothes out of her bag. I sit on the edge of the bed and grip onto her waist as she goes to pass by me. I pull her between my legs and look up at her.

“I didn’t get to thank you yesterday.”

“For what?”

“For looking after Ray while I was away,” I say, running my hands up her thighs.

“You don’t need to thank me, Leo. It was never a question of not doing so.”

I unbutton her shorts and tug them down her thighs, her thong soon following suit. Leaning forward, I press my lips to her lower stomach and feel her tighten beneath my mouth as my hands travel around to her ass and squeeze.

“I’m sorry about yesterday. I wanted to talk to you last night, but I drank too much.”

Grabbing onto her hips, I flip her down onto the bed and whip my hoodie over my head and toss it on the floor. Hovering over her, I press my erection against her and swallow her whimper as I claim her mouth.

Sweeping my tongue over hers, I should give her more of an apology, explain what’s going through my head, but I can’t pull away.

Not until I cup her cheek and find it wet. Breaking the kiss, I lean up and see a tear rolling down the side of her face.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” It’s clearly a lie.

I wipe the tear away, about to demand she tell me why she’s crying when she shoves her fingers into my hair and pulls me back to her mouth.

As much as I want to know, I can’t pull away. I reach down between us and shove my sweats down, freeing my dick. Gripping myself, I’m at her entrance, her heat enticing me inside when Rayna hollering for me interrupts us. I hear her footsteps getting louder and I jump off the bed and put my dick away seconds before the door opens. As I rush across the room to block her view of the bed, I toss the sheets over Holly and turn Rayna around.

“You ready for breakfast?” I ask and nudge her toward the stairs, closing the door behind me.

“Yep, yep, yep.”

I settle her at the table in the kitchen just as Mom and Bonnie walk in.

“I’m surprised to see you up after the amount you threw back last night.” Mom laughs.

“I ain’t no lightweight.” I snort. “Please tell me you’re here to make breakfast.”
