A loud bang at the door has us jumping to our feet. When Myles sticks his head inside, my stomach drops.

“You might wanna come outside. There’s something you should see.”

Sparky and I follow him out, and the first thing I hear is a strange humming noise. Following the brothers’ line of sight, I look up in the sky and see it.

“Is that a fucking drone?” I ask.

“Yep. Flew over a couple of times, and now it’s just hovering,” Zach tells me, looking intently at the thing.

“Shoot it down,” I instruct.

Multiple shots are fired, and I step back as the thing crashes to the ground in front of me. Slade moves in with Zach to look it over.

“It’s got a camera attached,” Zach tells me, pulling it off. “Hopefully it has a card. Maybe we can find something to use.”

Slade takes the drone while Zach flips over the camera. When he finds nothing, I sigh. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that this is Effie’s doing, trying to gather any information she can on us. I fucking hate technology.

“If you see more, shoot the fuckers down.”

I hate being vulnerable in our own club, but waiting on Effie to strike is even worse. If this is her first move, then I hope her second isn’t far off.

“What could they possibly gain from flying overhead?” Sparky ponders.

“They could learn the layout of the place, seeing exactly who’s here—you name it.”

My blood runs cold at the thought of anyone but us having this knowledge. Someone like Effie and her men knowing exactly where exits are on our buildings is more dangerous than a face-to-face shoot-out. The main house now has bulletproof windows installed, but it isn’t bomb safe. So many possibilities to consider.

“A word?” Leo asks from behind me.

“What’s up?”

We end up walking over to a bench by the main house. Zach and Slade disappear into the bar with the drone and camera, while Sparky heads into the house, no doubt to track down Bonnie.

“Did you know I was going to go against you on the Dead Rat matter?”

“Not really, but I wasn’t surprised you did.”

“You folded so easily.”

“Is that what you think?”

“From what I saw, yeah. You’ve been adamant that the club would hold back, and then in one breath, you changed your mind.”

“You should know by now that everything I do is for a reason. I didn’t fold, son. I’m looking at the bigger picture.”

“Do you care to tell me what it looks like?”

I laugh. It feels good, and the need for a smoke disappears.

“That’s for you to figure out.”

While we’re alone, I broach the subject of him wanting to get away for a few days for India’s fast approaching anniversary.

“Since we’re on lockdown, I guess you already know there’s no chance of you and Rayna leaving for a few days.”

“Yeah, I got that.”

“We can do something here. Slade, Kristen, and Zachery will no doubt want something.”
