“Dad’s on a hoarding kick at the moment, apparently planning for doomsday.”

The ride into town is tense, like it is most rides these days. There’s no enjoyment being on the road. Our eyes are everywhere, checking every corner, watching every hedge or bush we pass. Now that Cas has given the go ahead to deal with Dead Rats as we see fit, it’s open season, and I want one of them to pop up from behind wherever they lurk and attack. Fuck, I don’t care if it’s a group of them. It just means we get to take down more at one time.

The supermarket parking lot is pretty quiet. We all wait outside as the prospect grabs a cart and heads inside.

“Emma’s pregnant.”

Myles looks as happy as a pig in shit. It’s not much of a surprise, seeing she hasn’t been able to stand the smell of food lately.

“Congrats, brother.”

I get the excitement of it now. I understand the feeling of bringing another life into the world.

“Thanks. We were waiting to tell everyone, but obviously, I can’t wait.”

Technically, this will be his first time experiencing having a child. That whore who birthed Penelope didn’t even tell him she was pregnant, so he didn’t even know she existed till she was weeks old.

A baby boutique across the street catches my eye.

I tell my brothers, “I’ll be back in a minute,” and make my way across the street.

A bell tinkles overhead when I step inside. Fucking hell, there’s so much pink, and very little blue. Ignoring the girls’ section, I eye up the boys’ clothes, where nearly everything is covered in spaceships and storybook animals. My kid won’t be seen in this shit. But a tiny shirt grabs my attention.

Sprawled across the front are the wordsDaddy’s mini-me. Mommy’s headache.

It makes me laugh, so I take it off the rail. I know Harper will find it funny. Heading up to the cashier, I ignore the guarded look from the middle-aged woman behind the desk.

“Are you expecting, or is this a gift?”

“My wife and I are expecting,” I answer, pulling out my wallet.

“Oh, how lovely,” she chirps. “Bringing new life into the world is always so exciting. That’ll be $11.99.”

Smiling, I hand over the cash when I hear the roar of motorcycles. I walk over to the window and see a bunch of Dead Rats pulling up on my brothers.

Heart pounding, I rush back to the cashier.

“Whatever happens, don’t come outside, and don’t call the cops. If any damage is caused to your shop, the Lost Souls will cover the cost.”

Taking my change, I grab the bag and stuff it into my pocket as I charge out the door. The Dead Rats are off their bikes and standing a short distance away from my brothers.

I cross the street and come to a stop behind them. They have no idea I’m here, and Leo and Angel make sure they don’t give me away.

“You wanna do this here?” Leo drawls, cracking his knuckles.

“You bunch of pussies,” one of the Rats mutters.

“Though you may outnumber us, you’re still gonna lose,” Angel insists.

They only outnumber us by three. That’s nothing.

“This’ll be fun. We still have to pay you back for the attack on our brothers from a couple days ago.”

With their focus solely on the Lost Souls in front of them, I choose my victim. With a quick nod from Leo, I swing my fist into the back of one of the Rat’s head. Before he hits the ground like a sack of shit, I’m onto the next. The fall of their brother announces my arrival, and in the blink of an eye, all hell breaks loose. It’s a good old-fashioned fistfight.

It's like my body craves the swift movements of throwing punches, smashing elbows into cheekbones, headlocks, and heavy kicks. It’s fucking fantastic to free yourself in violent ways, and these assholes deserve it. They’re going to get everything that’s coming to them.

The guy I pounded on is down for the count, and his brothers are backing away. Myles manages to get one last punch in before the Dead Rats are at their bikes, with one guy dragging the first guy I knocked out over to their group.
