He looks at me, and the smirk on his face tells me my oldest friend hasn’t completely lost his mind.

“I’m putting his name forward to be president over the new charter.”

My eyes widen, and my cheeks balloon with a heavy exhale.

“Fucking Christ. You’re planning on leaving an empire behind in your dust—both sons, both a president.”

When his smirk turns into a full-blown grin, the changes coming don’t seem so daunting.

“Luca’s my son through and through. I just know this is what he’s meant to do. He’s fucking ruthless, Sparks. And Leo has everyone’s respect here. They’ve watched him grow, and know him inside and out. But the new charter, there’ll be new men joining who won’t know us, won’t understand what we are until time has passed, and Luca would set them straight in no time. When I think about it, it makes me fucking hard. I know I’m right.”

“At least you can still get hard. You’re gonna need it with all the spare time you’ll have on your hands.” We both laugh, which seems to carry on for a while. When our laughter dies down, I clear my throat and ask, “So what’s this I hear about you wanting to build houses on the property?”

He describes to me what could be, and like Harper, I can see exactly what he’s envisioning.

“It makes sense. Lockdowns would be easier on the old ladies, that’s for sure.”

“I think the future is dark. I think there’ll come a time when this place will be all the brothers have. We build now, the future will be ready for us.”

“You’ve got it all figured out, huh?”

“I have to have everything in place for Leo. The easier I make the transition for him, the better I’ll feel. Then it’ll be on him and the brothers to go forward.”

He’s not the only one who foresees a dark future. I’ve heard the brothers whispering about it too. It’s a good thing our main focus is to fight and survive.

Rising to my feet, I stretch my back out and sigh. “Well I’m gonna go find Bonnie. I’ll catch up with you later.”

Making my way to the house, I go to head up the stairs and run into Bonnie coming down them. Turning her around, I lead her back up to our room and lock the door behind us. Sliding my arm around her waist, I put myself under her as we fall onto the bed.

“What’s gotten into you?” she cries.

“Better question is, what’s about to get into you?”

She laughs as she fights against me, trying to turn around.

“You’re smiling, but you’re hiding something. What is it?”

She doesn’t miss a trick.

Releasing her, I stare up at the ceiling. I’ve never kept anything from Bonnie, and I don’t plan on starting now.

“Cas is going to hand the gavel down to Leo in the very near future.”

Sitting up, her mouth falls open and her eyes grow wide. “When?”

“Once the new charter is up and running, and he’s finished with the changes he’s been working on around the club.”

“Does Alannah know?”

“I’m pretty sure she does.”

“She hasn’t said anything…” Then it dawns on her. “Wait, does this mean you’ll be stepping down as VP?”

“Yeah. Leo will want his own VP, that being JJ. And besides, I’m Cas’s VP. It wouldn’t be right standing beside anyone else.”

“How do you feel about it?”

“When he first told me, I wasn’t exactly delighted, but after talking to him just now… I don’t know…”
