“And?”

“And I don’t need you to stay with me.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

My gut tells me there’s something else on her mind—something she doesn’t want to share. I wouldn’t ever admit it, to her or anyone else, but I like it when, on the odd occasion it happens, I wake up to find her cuddled up against me. For those brief, albeit few, moments before reality hits me, it’s like I have India back in my arms. That’s the main reason I prefer to share a bed with Holly, and I don’t like that she wants to take that away from me.

Jumping to my own conclusions, I bark out angrily, “Are you fucking a brother? Do you bring him over here?”

The thought alone has me burning with rage. When she finally looks me in the eye, I can see she’s horrified by my accusation.

“You’re not serious?” she retorts.

“This isn’t anything to do with your nightmares, so what gives if it isn’t about you fucking someone else?”

“It’s not right. You pay me to look after Rayna. I shouldn’t be in bed with her dad.”

“It hasn’t bothered you before, so I’ll ask you again—what the fuck is really going on?”

Sighing dramatically, she clenches her hands into fists. “You want to know? It’s because I don’t particularly enjoy smelling cheap perfume on you when you creep in here at night.”

I jump up to my feet and pace the room. Doing fuck all to help the frustration I’m feeling, I rest my forehead against the door, unsure if I want to bang my head against it or not.

“I… I thought we… you… Fuck, it doesn’t matter.”

I slowly turn around to find her once again fussing with the laundry.

“We?” I croak out.

“You should go back over to the bar. I’ll listen out for Rayna.”

Did she think something was happening between us?

Crossing the room, I yank the jeans from her hands and toss them onto the bed. She drops her head to hide from me, but I grip her chin and force her to look at me.

There’s no point in beating around the bush, so I ask, “Do you have feelings for me, Holly?”

“Not like it matters,” she grates out. “Really, it’s nothing.”

Fuck. At her words, I loosen my hold on her.

“You shouldn’t. Feeling anything for me will get you killed.”

“It’s not that that scares you though, is it?” she questions.

Dropping my hand like it’s on fire, I step back.

“It’s easier for you to fuck someone with no strings attached. There’s no guilt that way, right?”

Lunging forward, I get in her face and sneer, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

There’s always fucking guilt, each and every fucking time. It doesn’t get better, only grows until I’m choking on it.

“It’s Zara, isn’t it? You fuck her, and then you sneak in here with me.”

My jaw is clenched so fucking tight, it’s going to snap at any second. Turning, I make it to the door and grab the knob, but I stop. Maybe if she knows the truth, it’ll destroy whatever she feels for me, and we can go back to normal.
