I roll my eyes and grin. I can always rely on my wife to bump me up.

“Whatever you decide, I’ll be with you.”

My brows shoot up, and I stare at her like I’ve never seen her before.

“Really? You’re not losing your mind?”

Her giggle fills the room. “I’ll admit, it’ll be different having someone else at the head of the table, even if it is our son. But I’ve waited years to have you to myself… and hopefully, I won’t have to visit you in the hospital so often.”

That makes me laugh, because it’s true.

“When are you thinking of making the move?”

“Not sure. It’s just something I’ve started to think over.”

“Well, you’ve always got me, and I won’t say anything until you’re ready.”

Pressing my lips to hers, I wind my hand into her hair, bringing her closer. In all our years together, I never put the patch on her, but in reality, I did. Passing down the gavel would give me the chance to be the husband she deserves, the father Harper and my boys need, and a grandfather to Rayna and Harper’s baby. All I craved as a kid was a family, and now I have one. It’s time I stepped up for them.

She’s the first one to break the kiss, leaving us both breathless, and I find a tear rolling down her cheek. I swipe at it with the pad of my thumb.

“What’s with the tears?”

“When I married you, I knew I was marrying into the club, and that I’d have to share you with the brothers and their families. I’ve loved our life, Cas. You know I’ll stand at your side, whatever decision you make. I guess I just never thought too much about someone besides you being at the head of the club.”

“You’re so fucking perfect,” I whisper, leaning in to kiss her again.

Her lips, always craving more of me, kiss me back as she moves onto my lap and straddles me.

Grabbing onto her ass, I squeeze as she grinds against me.

“Cas!”

Fucking Sparky ruins the moment.

Slowly, Alannah slides off my lap, and I get to my feet. Pulling her back against me, I say, “We’ll talk some more later.”

She follows me downstairs, where Sparky is waiting patiently at the bottom.

“The twins and Angel are going to ride out with JJ and Harper. They’re leaving soon.”

I watch Alannah as she disappears into the kitchen and strikes up a conversation with Bonnie and Kristen, our talk making its way to the back of her mind for now.

“Good,” I say, turning to Sparky. “Have them drive around town rather than through it. If the Dead fucks are watching, they won’t hesitate to attack with Harper in the car.

They’ve already targeted Aspen’s cousin Rudi. The guy paid the ultimate price, and I won’t take any chances with Harper.

Stepping outside, I ask him, “Is she still in my old room?”

“I assume so. She hasn’t been seen. Jay was going to finish up with Slade and then go up to get her.”

He steps away from me and lights a cigarette, which is what he does now since the cancer. I laugh to myself. He cares enough to keep it away from me, but won’t give it up. This guy has been more than a club brother to me over the years. He’s been a real brother. It won’t only be me affected if I step down. Leo will choose his own VP, who will no doubt be JJ. Sparky’s been my second for years, and I wonder how he’ll take the changes coming.

Chapter Three

Harper

The walls are black. I squeeze my head between my hands, not knowing if it’s real. I don’t dare reach out and touch it. It looks and smells like death. It drips down the walls like a slow-moving waterfall that never reaches the bottom. I crawl closer to the bed and hide next to the nightstand, holding my stomach. I think my little warrior can sense the death too. She’s been kicking a lot more since we got here last night, but as long as I don’t touch the death, I’ll be safe.
